Ok, to clear the air technically I've been to China before *ehem* Hongkong *ehem* but not in mainland China.

I wasn't expecting that I'll be able to go to Shanghai, China at all!

2026 Nicole here writing about the misadventures of 2025, let me narrate about what happened exactly a year ago. As I have written in this blog a couple of moons ago, I also went to Thailand for work. Then a couple of hours after, I was transported to China...  also, for work 💥 Did I complain? NOT AT ALL!

I even received Roses from Ken upon arriving... only to leave again in a few hours for China.

Looking back, it was such a crazy week last year! I've had 2 back-to-back work trips, one in Bangkok, Thailand for a brand summit, and one in Shanghai, China for a TikTok Study Tour. I remember I arrived in Manila, Philippines from Bangkok, Thailand at around 1 am on March 31, then I have to fly out from Manila, Philippines to Shanghai, China at 8:30 am on the same day. 🛬

A few days before my trips, I have already packed 2 luggage, 1 for Thailand and 1 for China, considering that I won't have any more time to pack when I arrive from Thailand- and this is a good decision from my end because when I got home from the airport, I was exhausted! I no longer have any energy nor bandwidth to clear my luggage of all the things I've bought from Thailand nor even decide how many underwear I should bring! When I got home, I quickly took a shower, set my alarm at 4:30 a.m., charged my devices, and go to sleep. Ken even joked that it was the best 6 hours because we only had 6 hours to spend together before I have to fly again. I guess this is how celebs feel when they barely have time to spend with their loved ones because of their jet-setting lifestyle LOL😅 wow amfeeling!

Despite being exhausted, I was able to arrive at the airport in time, early enough to buy myself coffee before boarding. The flight from Manila to Shanghai is roughly around 3 hours only, so it's perfect for a short nap-which is also perfect for me because the in-flight entertainment in my seat doesn't work 😕 I swear, Philippine Airlines need to replace or fix some of their airplanes!

We arrived in Shanghai, China and was immediately greeted by the 10 degree Celsius weather! It was a stark difference from the hot and humid weather of Bangkok, but I gladly embraced this because like Elsa, "The cold never bothered me anyway!"

We stayed at the Pullman hotel, and our room is huge! We have 2 single beds (that are quite high lol), massive windows covered by heavy curtains, and a 75 inch TV that only has channels showing movies in Mandarin. Since this was a company trip, I have no idea how much it costed, but I estimate around 8k pesos. I mean, for the big space, the huge tub and yummy breakfast, not bad! But for some reason, I preferred our hotel in Bangkok, Avani Sukhumvit more.

First impression of Shanghai- It reminded me of Seoul, Korea with a lot of European-inspired architecture scattered everywhere. But unlike in Seoul, Shanghai surprised me with a lot of tech-related details, like they'll just look at you blankly if you pay with cash, hence it's a must that you have Alipay or at least a GCash app installed in your phone.

Also, regarding the VPN situation, prior to flying to China I subscribed to a VPN service for a month to ensure I'll still be able to connect to Facebook and other apps aside from WeChat lol. But apparently this is not necessary if you avail of roaming data via Globe- I only found out about this when Ken went to Guangzhou in October 🤷 Oh well, at least I was able to use the VPN to access certain shows in Netflix US for a month hahaha!

Walking around the Bund!

One thing I also noticed are the number of freelance photographers, they are scattered around the area offering to take professional-level photos for like 10 edited photos (on the spot!) for 10 Chinese Yuan! I saw in TikTok how the outputs are usually high quality, but I passed from getting one since I'm not really feeling too confident this day hahaha!

Eventually, we wound up at Nanjin Road and end up eating massive Xiao Long Baos as big as our faces! The one I ordered was made from Crab Roe, and it was delicious! At first, I was confused why I was given 2 straws, apparently it wasn't only for the can of coke I ordered hahaha!

Since we are at the mecha of Pop Mart and other toy collectible brands, I couldn't pass the chance to buy something! I did not buy a Labubu, but instead I got a Disney blind box plushie instead- which I end up gifting to my sister. Since it's still the first day, I only bought one to test the waters and pacing my spending LOL

We also visited Yu Garden which is a hotspot for having photoshoots. I saw a couple of girls wearing traditional Chinese costumes having their pictorials in different parts of this establishment, and hey, I can't blame them! This place is so beautiful! I am not sure if it's as striking in the morning, considering the lights do help set the tone of the place. Oh well, I guess the only way to find out is to go back to Shanghai someday 😉

My midnight snack while watching Jack Whitehall's TV Show Travels with My Father

After a full year, I feel more determined to go back to Shanghai, and hopefully with Ken. I was actually surprised how Shanghai was very different from what I envisioned it, mainly like Hong Kong, but nope, it was so much better!

One of the things in my wish list now is to watch an F1 race in Shanghai... then go buy the Song bag in Songmont, and take a bunch of photos at the Yu Garden! There are more things I would love to do in Shanghai, and even in other cities in China, but this point, all I can say is "hopefully someday" 😊

Love Always,
Nicole

Sad to say, in 2026 the giant Gundam in Yokohama is no more.

One thing that Ken greatly anticipated during this trip was to visit the Gundam Factory in Yokohama. While it wasn't a stone's throw away from Tokyo, getting there wasn't much of a hassle either. We hopped on a train from Shinjuku going to Yokohama, which was roughly an hour train ride.

From the nearest train station, we probably walked around a kilometer to the Gundam Factory. I remember it was placed near the port or water area. On the way we passed by a park, and quaint boutiques with European aesthetics.

We did not pay extra to go to the observation deck, because: 1. It's expensive, 2. It's so hot, and as you can see it doesn't have any shed, 3. I couldn't remember if there was an elevator to take you to the upper levels, so no, I don't have the energy to go several flights of stairs and to see Gundam's head. and 4. It's expensive!

Regardless of whether you pay for the regular or the special ticket, everyone gets a small Gundam set that you can build- I haven't built mine yet lol! I might do it this coming Holy Week holiday or build other Legos haha!

Similar to the life-size Gundam Unicorn in Odaiba, it also moves, but unlike in Odaiba this one kneels! I feel that Japan only wants the rest of the world to think that they are doing this as a "hobby" or an attraction ONLY to dissuade everyone from believing that they have military ready mechs... lol conspiracy theory, anyone?

The happy boi

The prices are not bad.

What is a Gundam Factory without a store?! Ken had so much fun shopping, that he ended up hand carrying his loot in the airport hahaha! It was amusing seeing fellow Filipinos flying out of Japan also lugging around a huge white Gundam plastic bag!

The store had a lot of limited edition toys and merch, I supposed now they are pretty rare considering this place no longer exists... What if I sell the Gundam sets Ken bought here? If I do that, that might be a ground for our annulment hahaha!

The food was dismal. It was dry, under-seasoned, and the servings was small for its price. No need for me to tell you not to eat here, because this place no longer exists lol!

Aside from the huge Gundam, the store, and the restaurant, there's also a museum-type area where they exhibit some Japanese innovations in Robotics and a little bit about cars. I just forgot which car brand sponsored that area, but that part was also cool 💗

Aaaaaand that's it! Hopefully they bring back the Gundam Factory again, but until then people can still visit the one in Odaiba and the huge Gundam Base in Diver City Mall.

Love always,
Nicole

The pinnacle of this trip was when I said, "Geh."

2026 Nicole here, and spoiler alert: Ken and I are married now! I wasn't able to write about things in 2023 nor in 2024, so I'm making up for lost time by writing about that time when I got proposed to almost 3 years ago. Where did the time go?

The first photo tho

It happened on August 14, 2023, during our trip to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. I remember that day; I wasn't feeling well. My stomach hurt, and I felt too hot because it was a scorching summer day. Also on our way there, I remember spilling rubbing alcohol all over my bag, which resulted in those ugly splotch marks - The more I felt uncomfortable about this excursion.

LOL

As expected, there were a lot of tourists-including us- entering the bamboo forest. For some reason, we ended up following a Chinese tour group hahaha! Ni Hao, Indeed!

Ken badly wanted to visit the quaint riverside spot we discovered during our first trip together. Still, before we head there, he took a couple of photos and videos of The Trinidads, as if he's doing a post-nuptial shoot for them hahaha! On the side, I took a lot of selfies because I'm such a narcissist hahaha!

Going to that particular spot was a trek! No wonder, not a lot of tourists go there because the path going to the riverside was so steep! No joke, I almost slipped and feared I might break a bone or something. But hey, I must say the view was worth it- My photos just suck, but I promise the views in the spot are worth getting lost for.

The reason why Ken wanted us to go there is that it is the spot he wanted to ask me to marry him 💖 So, why propose there, you ask? Ken vividly recalled seeing an elderly couple sitting in that spot during our first trip, and he thought back then that he wanted us to be like that couple someday - as simple as that 💝

A little tidbit about the ring, before proposing to me, I've already hinted that I don't like diamonds and would prefer a Rose Quartz instead. When he got my ring commissioned, he mentioned this tidbit to his jeweller friend. Unfortunately Rose Quartz is pretty brittle, hence opting for a pink Sapphire instead with smaller diamonds on the side. For the design, it's heavily inspired by Sailor Moon hahaha! This man really knows me.

Here's me proudly showing my ring, oblivious of the problems we will face in a couple of hours after hahahaha!

That's it for this special moment in my life! As I've said earlier, it's been almost 3 years since this proposal happened, we're married now, and life is good 💝 I am also rekindling my interests such as reading (I have a kindle now, and read 2 books in one month!), writing (with this blog), drawing, and creating content in TikTok (yep, I couldn't resist it hahaha!). I have a lot more stories I am excited to write about and share 😊

See you again soon!

Love always,

Nicole ❤

I would like to clear the air, I am no expert when it comes to anything culinary. At best, I can cook a knock-out Lasagna, but aside from that my culinary skills is average-and so is my taste. For a change in our itinerary, I recommended to the group that we try out this Italian restaurant that uses way too many veggies... How Healthy

Similar to our experience dining at Meriken Hayoba in Kobe, I made sure to book at least a week in advance via their instagram profile HERE just in case there's a bee line of people on the night we plan to have our dinner here. BUT WAIT, what is En Boca anyway?

According to Autoreserve.com:

"EMBOCA KYOTO is a restaurant that serves creative Italian cuisine using a wood-fired oven in an atmospheric space converted from a Kyoto machiya (traditional townhouse). As a popular restaurant originating from Matsumoto, Shinshu, it has earned high praise for its creative cuisine that makes the most of local vegetables and seasonal ingredients."

As I have mentioned, they use a LOT of vegetables in their cuisines, perfect for vegetarians, or those who simply want to manage their cholesterol levels. They have 2 branches, one in Nagano and one in Kyoto- the one that we visited. Their menu is a mix of course meals and ala carte, but since we aren't quite sure what to order, we opt to try the 6-meal course offering instead pero sa totoo lang tamad lang kami mag research.

Their specialty are pizzas ... with veggies

1st Course: Salad

A classic garden salad with a vinaigrette dressing and some strips of cold cuts ... for protein, I guess? Haha! It was fresh, light, and a perfect introduction to this gastronomic adventure NAKS!

2nd Course: Another Salad?

... or perhaps this is an apperitif? I'm not sure what category this one falls, but let me describe this dish: It's a platter of roasted veggies, with salt on the side for taste- it's as simple as that 💁 However, I appreciated this dish because the veggies do taste good because it's fresh, and roasted without causing so much burnt bits.

3rd Course: FISH!

FINALLY, SOME PROTEIN!!!

Understandably, it's tiny but I felt bitin or wanted more of it 😕 The fish is well seasoned, and that sprinkling of powder is miso which make it even more flavorful - NAKS!

4th Course: Soup

This one is creamy, tasty, and ... cold 😐 I understand that we had this during one of the hottest day of that summer season, but cold soup is not registering to me as an actual dish but instead, a dessert. Like most of the offerings, it was made of vegetables, and I remember it doesn't have any hint or taste of meat so I doubt they used Chicken or Pork stock. I didn't enjoy this one.

At least, Ken did.

5th Course: Pizzaaaa!

Their pizzas are big enough for 2, so if you want to try different flavors you can actually do half and half with this. The cheese mushroom pizza was DIVINE, really cheesy but not to the point that it feels too heavy. It was a different story for the bottom one, I don't even remember what it exactly it was, but I HATED IT hahaha! It tasted so weird, I think it had mint or something that doesn't really feel complementary to the whole pizza.

IT COMES WITH DRINKS!

With the Trinidads

You can choose between hot tea and an iced tea, both drinks weren't sweet FYI.

HAPPY ENDING: DESSERTS
IDK why Ken's ice cream even have a nest hahaha!

And the best Matcha dessert goes to this tiny Ganache masterpiece! Sweet, creamy, and a little bit of bitterness, I still have dreams about this dessert 😭😭😭

VERDICT???

Considering that we paid roughly Php 2-3,000 for a 6 course meal, I think it's a good deal since the food is nice, the staff are very accommodating whenever we have questions about the dishes, and I genuinely enjoyed it- except for the soup, I hated that 😖

Love Always,

Nicole
