The first gate leading to the Tian Tan Buddha

When I was 8 years old, I remember we went to La Union to visit the family of my dad's sister-in-law (or technically our aunt), where one of the highlights was a trip to the beach. It was going to be my first time to be in one, and at that time the only image of a beach I had are either from Baywatch, or from a box of a Beach-themed Barbie I had. Basically I was expecting sand, clear waters, and just a handful of people lounging and soaking up the sun. Lo and behold, the beach we went to was terribly rocky, has murky water, and felt like the whole of La Union came and joined us. I know not all beaches are like that odd-one-out in La Union, but I suppose that experience 'sort of' made me allergic to the sea, just 'sort of' because I love Capones Island huhu

A rare of footage of me enjoying in Capones

Soooooo, what is the relation of this little snippet of my past with this blogpost? WALA! Hahaha, kidding! It's just that during our 3rd day in Hong Kong we went to a mountain, and a sea-side (which I deftly connected to the beach story, OHA OHA). Anyway, let's just get on with the blog!

Coming from our tiny Airbnb in Tsim Sha Tsui (Oh the coziness hahaha!), we hopped into the nearest train station going to Tung Chung station. The line going to Tung Chung is almost similar to the line going to Sunshine Bay a.k.a. The Disney Resort line, so you can expect moms and dads restraining their little offsprings in the train with you.

Once we got into Tung Chung, the mecca of all good things, Citygate Outlets beamed at us, welcoming us into its arms, urging us to swipe our credit cards, and fill our hearts with good deals- since we are responsible adults, we looked away, and continued our journey towards the gondola/cable cars that will take us to Ngong Ping 360.

Silent hills P.T. cable car edition
From what I remember a one-way ticket going to Ngong Ping will cost you approximately HK$ 140 to 160. Now, why would you take a one-way ticket instead of a roundtrip one, you asked? Later the answers will be answered, and no we did not end up deciding to live on top of Ngong Ping village hahaha!

Also as you can see in the photos, it was verrry foggy! If you are terrified of heights, or just finished playing Silent Hills the night before, make a mental note to yourself to not travel in January hahaha 💭💭💭💭
Quintessential Turista photo, naks.

Should you ever find yourself worrying that you did not bring food or snacks while on your way to the top, donchuworry fam, Ngong Ping has lots of stores and restaurants where you can buy a variety of food, and even knick knacks. Just an FYI, souvenirs are quite pricier here compared to the ones sold in the mainland, so don't be swayed easily or wag maging marupok ☝

Just a few meters from the village proper, you'll get to see the breath taking lush greeneries, where tucked in it are 2 notable landmarks, the Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha (or colloquially known as, the big buddha).

Sure, at a glance you can already imagine how much panting you'll do once you climb the steep stairs, but let me tell you, it is worth the extra cardio exercise.

It's chilly at the top, and given that it was January when we were there, you can expect double the coldness. With that, make sure you are armed with a trusty coat, jacket, or even a pashmina will do. But if you can't bothered by the cold at all 'Elsa is that you?', then go ahead with a sheer top, and the highest of slits. You do you! Hahaha 👌

Beady eyes
Aside from the big Buddha, you'll see this place beneath it where you can go and worship peacefully. Aside from worshipping, I noticed a lot of names written on rectangular slabs of tiles placed on the walls, akin to columbaries we have here. I am not certain if that place is a columbary, but I did see a name of a Hong Kong superstar that died 15 years ago, but her fan base is still strong to this day- dozens of fresh flowers were laid below her name.

After wandering around the Big Buddha, and Ngong Ping village, we decided to take a bus going to Tai O fishing village. I remember it was during those times where we thanked the Gods that we opted for an Octopus card, rather than buying single journey ones, because not all buses and terminals accept actual money, and instead you must swipe your Octopus card on to the payment pad before you get to sit. So basically, make sure to go for Octopus card and load it up from time to time, since you can never be sure how much are the fares going to places-unless you are a local, well then 10 points to Gryffindor!

Also, just a quick note, the Octopus card can be reloaded at 7Elevens, which luckily was spread generously across the country 👌

My cousin had been to Hong Kong many times, more than the number of her own fingers, and yet she haven't been to Ngong ping until this trip. Her real agenda why we went to this part of the country is to see Tai O, which is this quaint fishing village at the foot of the mountain. One of the main attractions in this old time-y village is Dolphin watching, which includes riding a speed boat to the middle of the ocean...

Me, when I hear the word 'boat'
Ohhh I was shaking as I go inside the boat! I have always had a terrible trauma with boats and waves ever since I was a kid. With that said, it was a REAL challenge for me to step inside this boat for the dolphin watching. Just when I thought I'll be cool with boats now, thanks to the ferry ride to Ha Long Bay, I was definitely wrong. But given that, once again, my cousin had effectively reminded me that I might not be able to go back here again and do this, I stepped into the boat nervously smiling. Yep, that smile below? It's just trying to mask my nervousness hahahah!

We did not see any dolphin. NADA. But look at that view! You can hardly see what separates the sea from the sky, and at that moment I remember this weird immense feeling of awe, amazement, surreal, gratitude, and wonder. Our boat stopped in the middle of the sea, and it's actually really nice how everyone aboard became quiet and just soak up the calmness of our surreal surroundings.

I ended up loving it more than I was expecting.

But before our day ended, it wouldn't be complete without an hour or two worth of milling around Citygate outlets where we have done some damage. If there's a perfect place to buy Adidas shoes without breaking the bank, I would definitely vouch for this place. Aside from the initial discounts, buying 2 or more pairs will give you additional price slashes! With that, I ended up going home with 3 pairs- 2 of which are gifts hahahaha bilis magdefend haluuuh!

And that's it! Looking back, that was such a fun day! Even if I am not looking forward to returning to HK anytime soon, I still want to visit Ngong Ping again in the future.

Love Always,
Nicole 🧜‍♀️

As the title obviously suggested, this is my 3rd time in the land of neon lights, and coffin apartments.

Oh and this harbor too.

As much as I want to push and continue with the Japan blogs (mej katams huhu), let me start anew with my trip to HK last January. Me and my cousin, Lot (the same crazy cousin I went with in Vietnam), booked our tickets last July-I think? I don't know why we chose HK, when she's been there more than 10x, but hey who am I to say no to travels, right?

Somebody likes pink too much.
Our flight was at 8 A.M. so we opt to go to the Terminal 3 at 4 A.M. for us to have plenty of time to gorge on the free food at the lounge facilities.

But lo and behold, it's either because most Filipinos are flying back to their respective country of work, or the service of the airport sucks, they were a lot of queues in both the travel tax counter (still smh on why Filipinos pay for this, when the tourists should be the ones to shoulder this), and especially at the immigration part. Luckily we did not miss our flights despite reaching our gate at around 8:15 A.M.- The plane left the airport at around 10! Kalokaaa 🙃🙃🙃🙃

I don't know why I look like this in the photo 🤔

I missed HK International Airport, but what I don't miss is not seeing McDonalds the moment you are about to leave if. Idk, but I think it has been replaced by Crystal Jade 🙅 but anyhoo, upon arrival we were greeted with the cold air, something that is non-existance in even during January in Manila.

Forlorn?
Since we will be staying at Mongkok, we took the A21 bus. Just a quick tip, make sure you have exact 33 HK dollars with you, because the bus driver doesn't give any change. I'm not sure where the other buses lead to, given that with all the times I have been in HK, I have only stayed in Mongkok because I am poor. Also, if you are not in a hurry, it's ok to take the bus, because from Lantau (the island where the airport is at) to Mongkok it will take you only an hour, so that's a good time to take a nap.

The most disappointing sale.

Huhuhu

The minions will be thrilled
After dumping our luggages into our miniscule Airbnb, we immediately wandered around the malls near to us (Hola MiraMall!). Despite it only just our 1st day in Hong Kong, I have noticed a lot of differences compared to our previous travels there:
1. Things are more expensive. I don't think this one is HK's fault, it's just that pesos has become weaker, that 1 HKD is equivalent to 7 pesos now, when a few years ago it was only 6 pesos.
2. People are quite rude. Idk, maybe I got so mellowed down by Japanese people, that the Cantonese doesn't sound as melodic as before.
3. There are more 360 mart! More Kinder Surprise eggs in every corner!

Pwede na

At night time, we ended up having dinner in Cafe de Coral, where we ate this dessert thing that tasted like Ginataan but without the bilo-bilo-which just made me sad. Afterwards we decided to watch the dancing lights at the harbor, because believe it or not, I haven't seen it before haha!

That's about it I guess? More HK posts soon - or Japan ones... bahala na😂😖👋✌🤗

Love Always,

Nicole

P.S.
Don't bring Kate Spade bags when travelling, they are too heavy for their own good 🙅🙅🙅🙅

The moment my cousin, Lot, announced that she booked us a trip to Hanoi, I remember looking like this:

GPOY

Though, of course I am thankful for her for dragging my lazy, uncultured butt, however I never really see Vietnam as a 'Go-To' destination for me. Also after going to Japan, all I ever wanted to do is go to... well, Japan haha!

Yes, please take me back.

Just like Thailand before, I felt that Vietnam is similar to The Philippines, so what's the point of going somewhere that is the spitting image of your own country? Wouldn't that bore you? Those were my initial thoughts, until of course I'm already in Vietnam.

Our flight that day was at 10 P.M., so initially we have plenty of time to waste, but given the manila traffic, that despite leaving your office at 3 P.M., you'll still end up at the airport at 8 P.M. Since my office is at Eastwood in Quezon City, taking a cab or Grab going to the airport in Pasay is not practical ubos kayamanan kaban ng bayan mode. Instead, I decided to take a grab going to Araneta instead, and there I took the UBE bus that goes straight to the airport.

The UBE bus' terminal is at the back of Shopewise, and a few meters away from the restaurants at the ground floor of the Manhattan township. The bus follow a schedule- however due to the awful traffic situation in Manila, that 5:00 P.M. arrival time in Araneta become 6:00 P.M. Aguy.

I arrived at the airport at around 8:00 P.M., fresh from slumber thanks to the soothing movement of the bus-thanks to the traffic, our bus barely moved hahaha! But anyway, I got in time for the best stuff, the lounge.

Sadly, I wasn't able to take a photo of it because my focus was completely stolen by the unlimited chao fan and Coca Cola HAHAHA! Anyway, due to my cousin's heavy use of credit card + her being a frequent flyer, despite being aboard with Cebu Pacific only, she gets to enjoy the Delta lounge facilities any time she's at the Terminal 3 airport. I must say it is quite a nifty perk.

LOL

At around 10, we are aboard the plane where me and my cousin spent the 3 hour flight talking about how much Pho we'll be having hahaha! We arrived in Hanoi at around 1 to 2 am. At first I was feeling quite problematic, because I haven't converted my pesos to Vietnamese Dong, and since we arrived quite late already I feared that all the money changers are closed already! But thank heavens there are still 2 money changers open near the exit of the terminal!

Another problem we faced that night was transportation. Supposedly we should have booked airport transfers from Klook or KKday, but since we got so tied up with things, me and my cousin weren't able to do so HAHAHA! But lo and behold, they have Grab! And guess what? It's less expensive than the airport transfers that usually goes for around Php 700+ per way! From Noi Bai airport to old quarters, I think we spent around 200,000+ Vietnames Dong only, or roughly Php 450+, and that covers the 2 of us already!

Hep Hep!
Soooo, what's the moral of the story?
1. Go waaaaay earlier than the usual! Especially when heading to the airport, because Manila traffic is awful.
2. Do not panic! One way or another, there will be a better option that will pop-out of nowhere!
3. EAT AS MUCH AS YOU COULD AT THE LOUNGE! Since Ceb Pac doesn't have an in-flight free meal, indulge in all the sandwiches you could see at the lounge! Also, get yourself not one, but two bottles of cola, so you'll save a ton of money when you get thirsty up in the air.
4. Google translate is your bestfriend- more of that on the next coming posts!

Love Always,

Nicole
