Looking back, I don't remember knowing anyone who enjoyed doing a book review when we were in elementary school, but then again neither did I hahaha! I suppose, it's because of the fact that people don't really like it when they are asked to do something, but once they decide to do it without being ordered to, somehow it feels more bearable. Ok, let's cut the pyschology, and instead focus on the subject of this post: Book Review.

Last week, after finishing the book, The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand (which I'll also do a book review of), I decided to grab something that seems like a light easy read from my box of books from the Book Binge Bazaar. Since I'm feeling a bit fancy, and yes the dots persuaded me, I decided to grab this book by Tucker Shaw.

You see, you don't have to be Mr. Holmes to figure out that this book is heavily inspired by none other than Ms. Hepburn, particularly her fabulous portrayal of Holly Golightly.

Since this is a book review, let's cut it into 3 parts: 1. Characters and Settings, 2. A non-spoiler gist/summary, 3. Reaction with the uncontrollable spoiler (the part where you close your eyes until you get to see the 'Love Always, Nicole). With that let's start:

I. CHARACTERS

1. Gemma Beasley - The main protagonist of the story. A spirited 16 (or 17 hahaha) year old girl who's born and raised in Pensylvania by her writer mother, and father (I can't recall what's his job). She loves Audrey Hepburn so much, after discovering her from an issue of Teen Vogue she bought with her Christmas money.
2. Trina and Bryan- Trina and Bryan are Gemma's friends, whom she met online after she put up a tumblr page dedicated to Audrey Hepburn. Trina is poor like Gemma, working in a resto called Corral, while Bryan is a flamboyant Bel-Air bred boy who gets bullied because of his orange Cole Haans.
3. Telly- A constant basher of Gemma's FB page, because she can't stand how thin Audrey Hepburn is.
4. Dusty- The handsome guy who stumbled upon Gemma's blog because he needs help for his film class.

    SETTINGS

- Different parts of New York City, particularly the iconic Tiffany store front. Then there's this part where there is an auction at Sotheby's, then various restos and party places.

II. Summary (sans the spoilers)

The story revolves around Gemma Beasley, and her adoration/fascination to the perenially sophisticated Ms. Hepburn's famous character, Holly Golightly from the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's. Her love for the character urged her to create a Tumblr blog, not only to further gush about how fabulous Holly is, but as a way of her to escape her uneventful life. There, she met 2 quirky individuals who share the love of Holly Golightly, that they have decided to do a meet-up in New York to re-live Holly Golightly's life in NYC for a day. Once they have gotten together, all three of them, found themselves in a whirling adventure more thrilling than the story line of Breakfast at Tiffany's.

III. Reaction with uncontrollable spoiler

If you want a light read to get you through Manila rush hour traffic, this is definitely a good choice. You don't need to think too much to get immersed with the story, especially since it doesn't include highfalutin words and idioms. As for the story, I find it pretty bland, and totally undeserving of its fun and quirky cover. Here are my thoughts about the story:
1. The story could have been better if they put more meat to the personalities of the characters, since the author played it safe by relying on cliches. For instance is the character Bryan, whom is gay, fabulous, and filthy rich, but aside from the those words that I described him with, there's nothing more you can say about him. Also, for the main character of Gemma Beasley, author Tucker Shaw failed to make her relatable, which in turn made me not want to root for her throughout the story.
2. I find the story as if it is the author's weird fantasy dream. Like for instance is the part where Bryan doesn't mind treating his friends to a shopping spree in Barneys, Bergdorfs and Bloomingdales. I mean, really that's just too good to be true.
3. The whole story failed to show the consequences of the main character's wrong decisions, where the silver lining came too soon even before Gemma is able to fully understand and learn from her wrong choices.
4. The story is predictable, where even at the beginning I somehow figured out that Dusty is just another cliche heartthrob who's sole purpose in life is to get another naive girl go to bed with him. It could do better than that.

To cut it all short, I give this one a 2.5/5 book ratings, because to be fair it is a fun story. I also put in consideration that I may not be its main target market, as to why I did not fully enjoy it. So, if you're into a light, sorta feel-good YA novel to pass the time, you may want to consider putting this in your reading list :)

Love, Always,

Nicole.

I love books, I really really do, that's why I am more willing to spend money on a new novel, than splurging on other stuff like clothes. That's why when I found out about National Bookstore's Book Binge Book Fair, my world stopped for a minute, much like how Ewan McGregor's character felt when he first saw the love of his life in the movie, Big Fish.

This, THIIIS!

At first, I was a bit hesitant to actually do some full splurging on this bazaar, since also in February there will be another book fair which is The Big Bad Wolf Book Fair. I actually set a meager budget, and even wrote a list of the books I have specifically intended to purchase- oh boy, how I have forgotten about the list when I get there.

The book binge bazaar was last week, and until now, I still feel this certain high from being surrounded by amazing books at discounted prices! Waaaaah, I was in heaven back then!

Sooooo, I actually went to the book binge bazaar twice. One was last Friday, Feb. 9, right after I got off from work. I remember feeling sooo ecstatic, that I did not mind riding a jampacked bus just so I could go to SM Megamall faster- since the queue to ride the MRT is just plain unbearable.

Once I finally arrived in SM Megamall (after an hour and 10 minutes, because Friday night traffic is the worst), then the megatrade (where the book binge was at), I saw this:

Yup, there were a lot of human beings scourging through numerous tables full of good reads. It's not as crazy as I was expecting, but there were some few instances where I saw some assholes pilfering books from other people's carts while they aren't looking. Since I arrived pretty late already, I resorted to buying 5 books only that day; I bought 2 fashion books for Php 275 each (original worth of each book is Php 1,000 and above), 2 novels with one worth Php 175 and another one for Php 75, and lastly a children's book for my niece, which is worth Php 175. For the 1st night, my total bill was Php 975-which is good, but I thought then, I could do better, that's why I decided to go back again the next day... the moment the mall opened its doors.
Just imagine, I arrived at around 9:50 which is 10 minutes before the openining of the mall, and once the mall opened its doors I was the first one to rush to the megatrade, and yet there's a queue waiting for meeee! But luckily, it wasn't a looong one, and it moved pretty fast.

Since I was on a mission to get as much books as possible, I wasn't able to take a lot of photos. My eyes are focused on finding myself a copy of Ransom Riggs' Tales of the Peculiar, which I unfortunately wasn't able to get my hands on *cue sad face*. However, I did score a lot of books that were quite hard to find in that book bazaar.

By the way, I wasn't able to mention, you see most of the books sold at the Book Binge were Young Adult Novels and Children's books. There were some fiction books, but not as abundant as Levithan's Another Day, or the Bane Chronicles. Majority of the books sold were retailed at Php 175, while lifestyle books are at Php 275, which is the ceiling price of the books sold-the imported ones that is. So, just imagine how seeing people pushing carts bulging with books is just a natural phenomena that day.

This is a logical action. I am helping the economy.
I suppose, the ultimate tips/advise I could give to people, just in case the Book Binge Bazaar would do an encore, are:

1. Opt for the plastic basket/cart/trolley type instead of this metallic piece of shit. You see, there are a lot of people milling around desks cluttered with books, where if you decide to also have a look while pushing this you'll definitely have a hard time checking out desks after desks. Unlike if you use the smaller ones, you can still go to the narrow bookshelves without rolling onto other people's feet.
2. If you see something interesting, grab it! There's a big chance that if you go leave it on the desk, you wouldn't find the same copy again.
3. Find a small nook near the corners where you can sift through the books. Let's be realistic here, we really don't have all the money in the world to purchase everything we see (unless you do, you lucky asshole, skip this one), hence the reason why you have to re-evaluate whether all the books you have dumped in your basket should be given a chance to proceed to the check-out counter.
4. Shop with a friend! I noticed how this is really helpful, since 2 pairs of eyes are definitely better than one pair in finding a certain title. Also, with a friend, you can easily ask him or her to guard your basket while you try to check out the nooks with less spaces. However, in the event that you go there alone, it won't hurt if you make friends with a fellow bookworm, which I did! In the end, I did not only scored amazing books, I also gained new book recos and a friend. Win-win 👌
5. Go early! Even though the staff do stock new books by the hour, it's still best to go early since there are definitely more choices in the morning.
6. Eat something light! It's never fun shopping if you are feeling hypoglycemic!
7. Be very patient! Always check the weird nooks, because most often than not, sought-after titles are hidden in the most unexpected places.

After 2 shopping trips to the Book Binge, I have acquired a total of 25 books which cost me Php 4,500+, which I think originally would have cost me more than Php 10,000. Now, excuse me as I pay my credit card hahaha!

Nvm the They Both Die at the end and the thousandth floor because I bought that before mehehe!
Love Always,
Nicole 📚🎈

Nope, we did not see Pennywise in Bangkok, but we did float when we were in Thailand. Once again, once more this is a late post about my trip to Thailand more than a month ago. So, before I totally forget the things that happened, here we gooooo!

From what I recall, we had a stopover in a sugar cane/orchid farm, instead of an Elephant park because some people were too slow at the breakfast buffet :/ . However, I really couldn't recall seeing any orchid, or any much at all earlier that day HAHAHA- oh wait except for this one:
THIS IS GOLD
IDK, I think Thais have a penchant for personalization. In my 4 days there, I've had 2 instances where my face wound up in a souvenir item without my permission. Some of my co-workers bought the plates with their own faces, however I did not buy this one-I mean, imagine eating something delicious, then halfway you see your face frowning, as if frowning at you for pigging out junk again.

Anyway, moving on...

Ah, yes ate?
I actually just realized now that the floating market we went to was not located in Bangkok hahaha! I remember it took us around an hour and a half going there coming from our hotel in Baiyoke. The entrance going to the floating market itself doesn't appear as if in just a few meters there's a canal system waiting for you. Unlike the Venetian canal, where the gondola glides and makes smooth ripples in the water, here the boats you hop on are as fast as if you're in a jet ski chase scene in an action movie hahaha! If my memory serves me right, the floating market we went to was Amphawa, and unlike the other ones in Thailand they don't really sell that much in the water, since majority of the sellers are already in land. But instead of being disappointed by the fact that I won't be able to experience the authentic feeling of buying something while sitting prettily in a boat, instead I keep this in mind instead:

Imagine being stuck there and you need to pee soooo bad!
What will you find in the shops, you asked?

Aside from the usual souvenir and food, you'll also see some bizarre stuff, like a photo opportunity with a huge-ass python, and a little baby tarsier, for a hundred baht. As much as I like tarsiers, I passed the opportunity for a photo, because just an FYI to everyone, tarsiers are EXTREMELY (ok maybe not THAT extreme) sensitive, and it is frowned upon to touch them because it may stress them so much that they'll die. As for the python, you ask? C'mon you don't have to pay to have a selfie with a fake friend 🐍🐍🐍🐍

After the floating market, we then proceed to have lunch in a ferry- which I forgot to take photos because of extreme hunger. Then after the ferry, we proceed with the semi-main event: The Grand Palace.

Here's the thing, if you wanna go to the Grand Palace expect the following things:
1. You are going to walk-A LOT! If you're a part of a tour, do expect that your train, coaster, or van will park somewhere far from the main gates, as for those roughing it, your tuktuk will drop you about a kilometer away from the gate itself. From what I remember the reason why all automobiles are not allowed to be near the vicinity is because of the on-going burial rites of the King. With that, please leave your heels behind, and succumb to the comforts of a good pair of slip-ons, since you'll be required to take off your shoes upon entrance to the temples.
2. DRESS MODESTLY! This one is a must, unless you wouldn't mind missing out on the beauty of the temples. They are very strict! You see, it's common courtesy to dress appropriately in religious places, so be respectful and wear something less revealing. To help you, here are some of the clothes you shouldn't wear:
👚 Sleeveless tops (anything that shows your bare arms), Over-the-shoulder tops, mid-riff baring blouses and the like.
👕 Basketball jerseys (Why would you even???) and the like. For Women:
👖 For Women: Shorts, Short skirts above the middle of your calf, tights, leggings, denim pants, ripped jeans, and the like
👖 For Men: Shorts, Denim pants, ripped jeans and the like.
3. BRING A PASHMINA if you're unsure whether you are wearing something inappropriate, cover up with your pashmina or scarf.
4. Be prepared with a photo of your passport. The security sometimes check it, so just be prepared.
5. You are not allowed to seat on the ledges, or better yet be mindful where you seat, unless you wouldn't mind paying a 2,000 baht fine.

Hmmm yes?

You can crop me out if you wanna focus on the beauty of the palace ahahaha!
The Grand Palace tour was tiring but amazing! There were a lot of people at the time we went there, so just looking at the myriad of people taking photos and milling around exhausted me hahaha! The palace, in real life, is amazing-actually the word amazing wouldn't do justice on how majestic it looks. The one in my photo above shows the Phra Thinang Chakri Maha Prasat, and I suppose it was one of the residences of the Thai royals. Aside from that, The Grand Palace houses multiple temples, which are all stunning. If you love admiring architectural marvels, this is the place to be.

But before we go to the main event of this day, we headed first to MBK Shopping center, to well, shop hahaha! For those who know me well, it's not a surprise that I went to this particular place in MBK:

At the top level of the MBK Dept. Store, Tokyu, I found the small mecca of pens. Some pens in Tokyu are available even in Manila, then there are some where I have to order abroad. One particular item was the Pentel Fude touch pens, which I am currently addicted to. Oh I should have bought more!

Aside from pens and stationery, MBK houses a lot of shops selling food, clothes, accessories, jewelries, and everything else you could imagine. One tip I got from my co-worker was to buy sweet tamarinds here in bulk, since it's more affordable here than in Chatuchak-hell yeah, she is right.

Moving forward, after being given an hour to throw cash on senseless stuff in MBK, we now proceed to the main event: Chao Phraya cruise. Before you get to hop in the cruise, you'll enter first a mall with amazing art galleries on its top floors, so if you feel like adding an avant garde piece, wander the halls of the malls before you ride the cruise.

Here's the thing, I hate riding boats. When I was a kid, I had a horrible memory when I rode the ferry called Super Cat going to Puerto Galera, and from then on I never wanted to ride boats again. I remember when I woke up that day, I was dreading about the activities, which most has something to do with water transportation! But then again, it all turned out fine, since all the boat rides promised one thing: Food! By the way, the cruise has an amazing buffet in it where you get to stuff your face for 2 hours while you cruise the Chao Praya river.

This day was a great one, I must say. It made me change my mind about the thought that I wouldn't want to go back to Bangkok-now I wanna go back! Hahaha!

Love, Always

Nicole.

P.S.

Adieu, Soi Cowboy.
