To say that I miss Japan is a massive understatement, because Japan is my dream home where everything around me feels right, and finally we are back!

It has been a month since we flew to Osaka with the Trinidads, which consist of Ken's best friend Jay and his wife, Gene 🫰 Going to Japan on August feels like heading towards Hell's underbelly because it's the hottest season... Oops 🥹 but heck, whether we're dying of heat or freezing to death I'll go to Japan any day that I can!

Anyway, I'll be sharing some of the photos during our flight/first night, and the actual first full day in Japan and sprinkled in some commentary hahaha 👏

My motto is, "maiwan na LAHAT wag lang retainers ko"

Our flight is at 1:55 p.m., but given how unreliable Ninoy Aquino airport is (and considering the recent horror stories with immigration officers) we decided to go to the airport at 8:00 a.m. and be one of the first ones to check-in our luggages. Thankfully we did not experience any hiccups during check-in and even during the immigration line. Since Ken and I are not yet married we have to be interviewed separately by the immigration officer, and just like the check-in we did not experience any problems or odd questions.

I remember just being asked if this is our first time traveling together, and when are we going to return to the Philippines. I suppose it helped that I had a few stamps in my passport to validate that I travel often and don't overstay in other countries 🫰 but yeah, I would still suggest bringing additional documents like certificate of employment, your company I.D., your high school yearbook, a physical copy of your plane and hotel bookings and other documents to help justify that you're off to a vacation.

Eventually we were joined by the Trinidads at around 11 a.m., and we just ate some light lunch from Seattle's best. Food is ok, but I would suggest Starbucks instead, LOL 😂

Also I just want to share how hellish our flight was, not because we experienced turbulence but because of the chorus of children crying simultaneously for the whole 4 hour flight! You see, Cebu Pacific doesn't have any in-flight entertainment so I kinda get it that the kids are bored to death, but hey it wouldn't have hurt if they downloaded Cocomelon on the parents' phone, brought a book or a toy to keep the kids busy instead of letting their kid kick my seat behind 🥹 Kudos to the cabin crew tho, they tried to pacify the child by offering chocolates and other treats that's the parents' job, but they just let their kids be sighhh 😑

AAAAHHH we're back!

Behind the scenes from this train photo is the 30 minutes spent in the airport train station where we tried to figure out if the JR passes we bought will work on the airport transit (it's a no), and basically how are we going to our hotel. Eventually we arrived in our hotels, dropped off our bags, went to the nearest grocery store to buy bread and other snacks, and have a hearty dinner at the nearest Sukiya🤣

I miss you already 🩷

THE NEXT DAY

Now the fun begins! Our agenda for the day is to go to Kobe for Kobe beef and Nara to feed the deers. Sounds simple, right?

Haha... no. I don't know why but Ken and I find the Osaka railway more confusing compared to Tokyo's that's why we ended up riding a wrong train, and had multiple hiccups in finding the right platforms.

But eventually we have reached Kobe! It was an hour train ride from Osaka Umeda station, and during the train ride we got to see some of the majestic countryside as we reach Kobe. Supposedly we were headed to have some quick snaps at Kitano Ijinkan which looks like a small European town, but in account of arriving later than intended and having a tight schedule (and our reservation for Kobe beef is strictly at 12 noon) we had to skip it because if we still push for a quick trip there an hour won't suffice since to reach it we'll need to walk a bit from the train station.

Since we were in a bit of a time limbo where if we head straight to the restaurant already we'll be too early and there might not be any places to hang-out, we decided to drop by one station before our intended station for a quick check + photos.

An alleyway packed with interesting restaurants and shops became the perfect background for taking vids. You see, Ken wanted to beef up his directorial reel so he offered to make a Pre-Nup kind of video, and while doing it I was his assistant- I wasn't a good assistant to be honest 🥹😆

We looked ridiculously kawaii in this picture 😂 Good thing the boys joined in the fun, look how pretty they are!

Eventually we headed to Meriken Hatoba which serves sumptuous Kobe beef meals! Prior to going here I ensured to book a reservation via their Facebook page a week before our trip, considering that most sought-after restaurants and sights in Japan requires reservations.

The first time I had Kobe beef was during our trip 3 years ago where we had it in skewers, it was yummy but the one we had in Meriken Hatoba is glorious! Each of us ordered a set meal which includes rice, some side veggies, a soup, the Kobe beef, and a complimentary drink of either a shot of whiskey or grape juice. Ken and I opted for the whiskey as we believe it's 5 o'clock somewhere and we have to join in the fun, and the whiskey did not disappoint! I'm not particularly sure about the name, but I think it was Suntory Hibiki and it was smooth 👌 I kinda regret not taking home a bottle and start spiraling as a full-pledge alcoholic.

Going back to the food, it was lovely! Disclaimer I am no expert nor a person of fine taste, but the meal was glorious! The Kobe beef was grilled perfectly, very soft but not to the point that it disintegrates quickly in every bite, and of course they do let you choose how it's done but also sharing chef's recommendation. They also provided a side of seasoned salt just in case you prefer to sprinkle it a la salt bae on your own. As for the ambience it's pretty nice cozy even since the restaurant can accommodate around 10 people max, and the staff are very accommodating and are well adept in serving people of different nationalities, so if you don't speak Japanese aside from arigatou and sumimasen it's alright 👌

Overall, the ¥6,000-7,000 bill per person is worth it 👌 I recommend people to check it out and place a reservation HERE!

Gawa mue beh?

When I say August was the hottest time in Japan, I wasn't exaggerating in fact it was scorching! I had to buy one of those cooling wet wipes just so I don't overheat and pass out! With such heat it's so hard to go around and explore that we ended up spending way more time inside stores with air conditioner and a café-yes, right after having a hearty meal because to cool down is a necessity! Much like most of Japanese cities, Kobe also has their own arcade malls full of mom and pop shops mixed with popular stores like Daiso and Matsumoto Yamamoto. One of the places I love checking out are the vintage stores that are well-curated with fancy clothes like the white dress above but unfortunately tend to be on the pricier side.

Since we have spent way more time indoors it left us with no time to go to Nara hahaha! When we got back to Osaka we were able to go to the tourism office and they don't recommend us going since at 5:00 p.m. it's already late. They mentioned that the deers have probably gone home by then leaving us np one to feed biscuits too LOL! I guess Nara will be part of our itinerary for our next visit on a cooler season instead hahaha!

With nowhere else to go, we ended up exploring the Hep Five mall at the Osaka Umeda station instead, and inside were a couple of interesting stores mixed with well-loved ones. The Disney store in Umeda Hep Five is glorious as ever, but I did not let it lure me into buying stuff I don't need-yep even the cute Disney make-up items that were on sale! I was this🤏 close into buying a Disney Story Doll but backed off when realized that they don't have a Merida one.

We capped off this day with a little side trip to the toy store, which I did not enjoy because they were only selling gunplas and robots- I ain't into that life hahaha 😂

Special participation of our luggage and Ken's sneakers hahaha!

That's it pancit for our flight and first full day in Japan! Aside from having fun, I also had a blistered foot and raked in 19,000+ steps 👌

Love Always,
Nicole

All I want to say is I thrive in colder weather 🥹 Also with clothing, I enjoy layering than wearing less articles of clothing that's why I will still prefer vacationing during colder seasons. Anyhooooo I wanna share some of my fits during that glorious winter trip (in no particular order lol).

1.
🧥: Coat from Stradivarius
🎩: Hat from some store in Vietnam lol
👕: Sweater from Calypso, and another cardigan from Balmain (thrifted ofc!)
👖: Trousers from Forever21
🧣: Scarf from grandma lol
💍: Earrings from Class Act Ph (lol ofc)
👢: Boots from Forever21 (not photographed here)

This was during our first night right after we arrived, and the very first time I got to experience how unforgiving winters tend to be. At that time, Ken was already freezing at 10° Celsius while I, on the other hand, the first thing I grabbed from the konbini was a mochi ice cream. Yes, Elsa is not the only unbothered queen in this house.

Also, I remember only wearing this hat one time throughout the trip and I don't know why it wasn't utilized as much 🤔

2.

🧥: Coat from Stradivarius
👕: Sweater from H&M
👖: Jeans from Divisoria
💍: Earrings from Class Act Ph (lol ofc)
👢: Sneakers from Adidas
👜: Bag from Ferragamo (thank you mama hahaha!)

I remember when packing for clothes for this trip I didn't really create like a Lookbook to check which will go with which, and instead I just threw in articles of clothing in neutral colors (and some very few reds and oranges) and call it a day 🤣 As a result, I think I managed to look... decent 🤔🥴

Also, looking back my Class Act Ph earrings pop! I think I need to revive my business for this holiday 🤔🫰

3.

🧥: Coat from Ukay-Ukay (no brand)
👕: Sweater from Lowry's Farm
👗: Skirt from Charles Jourdan
💍: Necklace from ClassActPh
👢: Boots from Forever21
👜: Bag from Ferragamo

An outfit that I can never wear in the Philippines! Aside from this is too acclimated to cold weather, I can just imagine the judgy eyes of people around me if I wear this in Manila hahaha! This is during our first full day and by the looks of it I did put effort especially with make-up and hair. As day goes by I spent less time on my make-up and reverting to basic eyebrow, cat-eyeliner, cream blush, and liptint haha!

4.
🧥: Coat from Stradivarius
🧥: Cardigan from Balmain
👗: Dress from Forever21
👢: Boots from Forever21
🧣: Scarf pilfered from my sister's closet haha!
👜: Bag from Anello

The dress I was wearing here was bought in Japan several months before this trip. At that time, Forever21 in Japan was closing its doors hence they were clearing out their inventory with crazy sales, and that's why at that period in my life my closet is brimmed with Forever21 clothing 😂. Back then there were several Forever21 stores in Shibuya and Shinjuku alone, but they bid goodbye in 2019-2020 right before the Pandemic.

Anyway, I'm glad that my outfit color scheme matched the Sepia-tone Studio Ghibli museum and it's nearby Inokashira Park 👌I wasn't wearing any thermals underneath but the cardigan I was wearing was made of wool and I think it really helped in warming me up- So is the ferret-looking scarf I was sporting which fortunately is made of synthetic fur instead of animal. Overall, I really feel looooong in this outfit, my legs look terrific here! Hahahaha!

5.
🧥: Coat from Ukay-Ukay
👕: Sweater from H&M
👔: Shirt from H&M
👖: Jeans from Forever21
👢: Sneakers from Adidas
👜: Bag from Ferragamo (thank you mama hahaha!)

This is what I wore during our trip to the Teamlabs in Tokyo, back when it was still in Odaiba. Back then, I remember reading in an article that it's advisable to wear white because there were some spots in the museum where effects would pop out more in white, hence this sweater 👌 Also good call from my end to wear this, since there were also interactive slides and activities inside which I wouldn't have enjoyed if I were in a dress or skirt.

There's also a cute story behind the sweater I was wearing. Several years prior to this trip I bought this sweater for Php 499 with the mindset, "I'll wear this in Japan someday", and at the time I have only been to Hong Kong, and since my salary was relatively small an unplanned PHP 499 purchase was quite a dent to my finances. Lo and behold, after a couple of years I am able to go to Japan many times 🫰 I do my manifesting with clothes and a destination in mind 👌

6.
🧥: Coat from Ukay-Ukay
👗: Dress from Zara
👢: Boots from Forever21
🧣: Scarf also pilfered from my sister's closet hahaha!
👜: Bag from Ferragamo

Kyoto was colder than Tokyo, so when I wore this outfit during our trip to Arashiyama Bamboo forest and Fushimi Inari I was freezing!!! That sliver of exposed thigh skin was in constant state of goosebumps, because it was just so cold 🥹😂 I think it's because it's breezier being inside a location full of trees.

I also put a little bit of effort to curl my hair, but eventually I tied it up lol 😂 But hey, it does look nice being tied up 🫰 Lastly this was the only time I wore the dress, I don't know why I didn't wear it earlier in the trip since it's such a pretty dress- I still wear it to work nowadays 🖐️

7.
🧥: Coat from Ukay-Ukay
👕: Sweater from H&M
👖: Trousers from Forever21
👢: Sneakers from Adidas

Now this one is something I should have worn in another day, preferably one where I get to take photos in sights and pretty locations, and not when I go for a quick grocery run 🥹🤔 This was worn during our rest day in Kyoto when Ken's gout acted out that he can't walk around 🥴 Oh well, hope to give this a repeat performance in a future trip *fingers crossed it'll be this February*

8.
🧥: Coat from Ukay-Ukay
👕: Sweater from H&M
👖: Thermal tights from Uniqlo
👗: Skirt from Charles Jourdan
👢: Boots from Forever21
👜: Bag from Anello

I really have no idea why I didn't wear tights during the first half of this trip 🥹😂 but hey, at least I did wear it this time because it was freezing as well in Osaka.

I no longer added some outfits, like the one I wore in Universal Studios Japan nor what I wore on our last day, given that I didn't take a photo of myself at that time. Similar to an older post I did about a run-down of all my outfits in a past trip, here are some of my learnings when it comes to dressing up:

🫰 Invest in good coats - Don't be overwhelmed by the word ~investment~ and think that your coat must be expensive and must be bought from a swanky shop, because you can buy really good ones online, in malls, and yes, in Ukay-Ukay! In Ukay-Ukay, usually they are sold for Php 150-400 and usually some stores sell ones that are actually branded! But if you are not yet sure about shopping in Ukay-Ukay you can also check out sales, preferably during off-season in Uniqlo, Stradivarius, and Zara, but for that you better anticipate shelling out at least PHP 2,000 👌

🫰 2 pairs of shoes will go a looooong way! - You don't need to bring a lot of shoes, and I would suggest you not to bring more than 2 to accommodate more luggage space for shopping 👏 Just make sure to bring comfortable shoes that will enable you to have 19,000+ steps in a day without killing your feet.

🫰 Heat tech is your best friend - If you don't like to feel like Michellin man, stock up on heat teach undergarments. Also Heat tech is actually a patented material from Uniqlo, but thermal wear can be purchased from different stores like ski innerwear from Decathlon where the sell them for way less than in Uniqlo. But if you are adamant in getting it in Uniqlo, buy it off-season like during summer.

🫰 Dress for comfort, but don't look lazy either - This is an advice that I should really be imbibing since I often look like trash when flying to the destination, and during fight going home hahaha! Usually, I wear everything that I deem heavy, so it won't add more grams to my luggage hahaha! You can just imagine how much I look like a walking coat hanger 🥴

That's it, and that's how I cap off the Japan 2020 trip, and now I'm off to start with Japan 2023 🫸🫷

Love Always,
Nicole

Let's make this even more confusing and chaotic by posting this blog post about our time in Osaka during our trip in 2020... Yes, 2020 🥹

I wasn't able to conclude this trip since I often start a lot of things and rarely finish it 🥴 and it's been 3 years already and I have already finished my recent trip to Japan hahahah, but we're here now and let's get it done.
Can't find this anymore huhu
Our first agenda for our first time in Osaka is to visit the Osaka castle.

Stepping out of the train station the first thing I saw was the Starbucks lol 😂

Prior to reaching the castle you'll go through multiple fortresses and gates, better wear comfy shoes because you'll be doing a lot of steps.
Dweeb.

And yes, you can actually go inside the castle since it's a museum and you can go to the top to see a panoramic view of Osaka. There's an admission fee, but when we visited we purchased an Osaka Amazing Pass initially for bus and train rides it enabled us to visit multiple landmarks without paying for additional admission fees.

You can also indulge and buy some snacks within the vicinity of the Osaka castle, like this Takoyaki. Actually within the inner fortress there's a building with a café at the top, it looks quite fancy that's why we assumed that it's expensive and did not bother checking it out LOL 😆

Best pairing: Matcha parfait and Czech beer 👌
Clear skies enabled us to see a lot of Osaka

After Osaka castle, we headed out to one of the highest buildings in Japan, Umeda Building. Similarly to Osaka, there's an admission fee you have to pay to be able to go to the top but because of our Osaka Amazing Pass we got in for free. Up top there's a café, a souvenir shop, an exhibition about how the tower was built, and a scary long escalator to reach the topmost level. I'm not afraid of heights, but this place made my knees weak!

Making the most out of our Osaka Amazing Pass, we also tried out the Tempozan Ferris wheel. It was nice seeing the sun set from above, and it has its own themed song hahaha! I am still trying to find it in the internet because it's so calming that I want it to be part of my Spotify playlist hahaha! 😆

No other tourists! I have all the space I need with Glico Man!

And last, but not the least, our final voyage with our Osaka Amazing Pass was the ferry ride in Dotombori river- yep, there is such a thing 👏 Given that when we got there the COVID-19 virus is on its early days, there weren't a lot of tourists hence there were like only 7 people in the ferry including the guide and the driver! Oh such a different time.

THE NEXT DAY

Now this one is interesting, I bought our ticket for buy 1 take 1! Yep, I got our tickets for only PHP 3,500.00 pesos at that time, and I remember due to the increasing number of people getting infected by COVID-19 almost all the amusement parks in Japan will cease to operate starting Feb. 28 until April (which was later extended since at that time people were assuming lockdowns will be done by then...lol), and guess what day we went? FEB. 27, 2020!!!! WAAAH! So basically this is the last day the park will operate!

Despite the early days of the pandemic, you can definitely feel the vibe around us especially the amount of people in the park. Sure, we still had to wait in line for some rides, but compared to our recent trip, the February trip in USJ was such a breeze!
I suggest you buy a cup of Butterbeer and ask for the memorabilia cup instead of these which were sold at the shop after the Forbidden Forest ride.

Of course we spent a lot of time at the Wizarding World! I got so emotional seeing Hogsmeade and the majestic Hogwarts castle, it was the moment that I realized that a dream of mine just came true ✨💗 An answered prayer indeed! ✨

While visiting this part of the park we visited Ollivander's to see if we'll get chosen by the wand, luckily we weren't chosen because I think spending PHP 2,400 for a piece of stick is a massive waste of funds- instead we bought our Hogwarts house's scarves! Mine is Hufflepuff and Ken is Gryffindor, and surprisingly we got a lot of use from those scarves, we ROI-d them! Hahaha!

I dunno why I look so pissed, I swear I was over the moon that day!!!
Nowadays to get this shot, without people in your background, you need to be a wizard to crop them out! I kinda miss how less crowded USJ was and how cozy the weather was when we went in Feb huhu 🥹
Get this drink + cup for around ¥ 1,000
The Spiderman ride has got to be one of the most underrated rides in Universal Studios Japan! It's sad that they'll be removing this ride starting next year, 2024!!!! I suppose it's because Disney has full reins on Marvel and other superhero IPs as well. I'll be missing this ride!

I wasn't able to take a lot of photos since I had a lot of fun going on rides and just enjoying the moment. Among the attractions, one of the fun ones is Waterworld which is a show with cool effects, I definitely suggest people to check it out when they visit the park. On the other side, the ride I don't recommend is the Minions one, I think the 1 hour queue to ride it was a waster of time though 😑

THE LAST DAY

Walking around an almost empty Dotombori is quite surreal, because even in the wee hours of the night nowadays it is still packed with tourists eating or drinking in noisy bars.

I remember during our walk around the city I would get messages from my mom and colleagues asking if I could buy them facemasks in Japan since it's out of stock in The Philippines already! We spotted a store selling masks, but they were exorbitantly priced at ¥ 100 per piece of surgical mask! Yes, you've read it right, PER PIECE!!! Such a crazy time 3 years ago!
We did not go far away from our hotel during our last day since our flight was at 8 p.m. that night, hence we decided to spend our remaining yens on all the yummy food we see. We got really good Kobe beef, Melon Pan, Paul's cheese cake, Takoyaki, and lots of Alfort Bourbon chocolate!
It was exactly last month when we left for Japan, and 2 weeks since we arrived and I still miss that glorious place! I am already checking out flights and clearing schedules to see if I can squeeze in a quick trip to any city in Japan before August 2024, because ... 🫰 Hehe we'll talk about it in another blog 👌

Love Always,
Nicole
