A couple of years ago I created a blogpost titled, 'Digit-Eyes,' where I said a couple of things about how much of a struggle it was for me to conform with digital art, given that I am more adept with the good ol' pencil and paper (You can check it out HERE).

To be honest I still find digitalizing my art, or doing art digitally intimidating, mainly because I get frustrated easily when I don't understand how certain tools work hahaha! Slowly, I am overcoming that stubborness, and lo and behold I was able to create 2 coloring books created via Autodesk Sketchbook!
Hollaaaa!
As part of my efforts in helping out our peers who needed financial assistance during Enhanced Community Quarantine I did 2 coloring books, one is OUTSIDE THE LINES which features fashion illustrations heavily influenced by Japanese street fashion- and basically clothes I wante to wear for myself ♡ hahaha! The other one is SWITCHING PLACES a collaborative work with my incredibly talented friend, Alex Esmeralda, where our main theme is mixing influences of eastern and western pop-culture, hence the creation of Sailor Princess Bubblegum 😂
Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate 🥔🥔🥔
I enjoyed coming up with the idea of Princess Bubblegum wanting to be Chibi Usa from Sailormoon, like she wanted the whole costume and even the right weapon, but she still has her crown and a handy Erlenmeyer flask 🧪 <--- I know test tube yan, wag kayong ano dyan!

Initially I had no plans of actually adding color to my artwork, but after getting stuck with the coloring part of my illustration/line art of Marceline The Vampire Queen artwork I vowed to do as part of my Six Fan Art Challenge entry (I know late na, wag kayong ano dyan), I decided to experiment and see how well, or bad, will my coloring skills be if I test my coloring skillz on this Sailor Princess Bubblegum.

It took me a couple of days to finish the coloring, because unlike how my drawing habit is when I was younger, after a couple of minutes I tend to burned out 🤷‍♀️ When I was younger whenever I started on a drawing I make sure to finish it all including the coloring part, otherwise I'd lose interest on it and won't touch it ever again! But as I grow older, and become a bit OC-OC with my artworks I learned better to remind myself that I don't have to finish an artwork in one sitting.

Another thing I learned recently when doing digital illustrations is to color against a gray background. At first I thought this is a nifty guide to ensure everything is colored, even the white bits, just in case you'd like to make its background transparent. While yes that sounds like a good reason behind coloring against a gray background but there's actually a more aesthetic/color theory-based reason why this is a good practice. I learned from a bunch of youtube tutorials that doing this practice helps make sure that your colors won't be dull, especially for skintones! I actually tried coloring this artwork in plain white background, and the skin color ended up looking frail and pale! But when I revert to this technique, the skin color became a bit vibrant!

Also, I think coloring this way also helps in learning more about shadings and shadows, something that I am still struggling with 😔

Check out that white eyeliner wing😛

Despite all the cool techniques I have learned recently, I still stay to my roots by still coloring stuff top to bottom, and with that the first part I color is hair. Whenever I color hair before I usually just put on the base color, and find it difficult to gauge on where to put the highlights and shadows! But since I am learning light sources and shadings in drawings, I think I have improved in this department by now knowing how to create more depth- and adding shine for that shampoo commercial shimmer pizzaz!

Werq it gh0rl!
I know I still have a looooong way to go until I get to master doing digital art/illustrations, but right now I am genuinely excited on doing more drawings and learning along the way! Before I used to get so insecure about my lack of resources, thinking that my humble Galaxy Tab A or 3 year old Wacom Intuos (whenever I opt doing drawings on my laptop) + Free Autodesk Sketchbook App makes me feel inadequate, but after spending A LOT of time being one with my tools (ay lightsaber lang teh?), I realized that it's not about having the state-of-the-art tools, it's about your eagerness to hone your talent with whatever resources you have on hand.

Another thing that used to bother me is my insecurity regarding my talent, because whenever I see those IMBA artworks from Deviant Art, Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr, I feel like shrinking in a corner and feel like my artworks are nothing but trash. Obviously, that's wrong, because rather than see those other artworks as, "competition", use them as inspiration to push you to improve your talent! Lastly, the best way to gauge your improvement is not comparing what you created with other artists, but comparing it with what you have created in the past ☝️ The only person you should be competing with is your past self 😉

Tadaaaah, here's my final artwork of Sailor Princess Bubblegum ♡

Will definitely post more to keep track of my improvement 😉

Love Always,

Nicole 💗

Lo and behold we are now on Season 3 of Enhanced Community Quarantine here in Manila, and as far as I have read about the Covid-19 situation here in our country, our average case per day ranks up at 150! All the more reasons we have to take care of ourselves, and stay at home!

With the additional time spent at home, we have more time to discover new activities and revisit some old habits, which is perfect because the coloring book series now has a volume 2!

As mentioned in my previous post, I decided to continue doing this coloring books to further inspire people to use art as a therapy, and to encourage people to use their skills to help out others. For the volume 1 of my coloring book, I did mention my objectives behind that project, and one of it is to urge people to donate to various efforts battling the fight against COVID-19, and well I suppose this one is no different from that one.

If you still can, please do!

Nooooow, what's new with the volume 2? Aside from the theme, this coloring book is a collaboration with one of my closest peers from college, Alex Esmeralda! Ever since college days Alex has been amazing in creating digital artworks featuring anime characters- heck she was one of those people who inspired me to have a Wacom Intuos and improve my skills in digital arts!

For this coloring book we each chose different characters that'll show how show some of our beloved characters gain inspirations from the other side of the pond, west to east, east to west. Alex drew such characters like Starfire from the Titans borrowing Rin Tohsaka's aesthetic, and 2 other equally stunning artworks.

I mean, just look at these pretty ladies! Alex did a fantastic job, indeed!
As for me, I did a mash-up of Princess Bubblegum and Chibiusa from Sailor Moon, and D.Va (from Overwatch) as Jill Valentine. To be honest I am still testing the waters when it comes to drawing illustrations entirely using digital means only. Usually I would draw something using traditional media (e.g. watercolor paper, and a student grade mechanical pencil) first, then I would trace it using an old Samsung Tab A with Autodesk Sketch app. But for these I created 2 of my artworks solely via digital means only, which was a fun challenge for me.

The biggest challenge for me in creating these artworks would be the weapons. For Princess Bubblegum x Chibimoon, I drew a Moon stick which was actually used by Sailormoon, and not Chibiusa hahaha OOPSIE! As for D.Va, I drew her Light Gun, rather than opting for a pistol that Jill Valentine would have used in the Resident Evil games.

MOON HEALING ESCALATAION ATTACKKKKK!

NERF THIS!
Like the volume 1, this new coloring book is ABSOLUTELY FREE! So you may download it via the link HERE, and you can either have it printed and color it using whatever means you want- if you want to paint it with coffee, then go ahead hahaha! You can also opt to color it via Photoshop, Procreate, or whatever app you have, YOU DO YOU! 👍

Also, if you are interested in donating and helping out, you may check out my blogpost about it HERE for more details ♡

Lastly, you may also check out Alex's artworks at rekii-art.tumblr.com ♡ A huuuuge thanks to Alex for sharing her talents for this project!

Enjoy adding more color to your life!

Love Always,

Nicole💓

As I have mentioned in my previous post PLASTIC LOVE, I am interested in starting something with the following objectives:

♡Help out people struggling with anxiety and depression with art.
♡Inspire people to create artworks while on enhanced quarantine lockdown and refrain from using TikTok.
♡Urge people to donate to different causes, e.g. funds for Personal Protective Equipments for our frontliners.

With all these in mind, I created a...

TADAAAH! I created a mini coloring book! Since I've had a couple of sketches that are waiting to be colored, I had this crazy idea to digitize them and make them available to be colored not only be me, but by others as well. This coloring book I created has 5 fashion illustrations which I made in both traditional and digital media. The size is A4, in a PDF format, and it can easily be printed out, so you can use your Faber-Castell watercolor pencils, or your kid's crayons, YOU DO YOU 🥰 But if you're more into digital art and want to bust out your intuos, or even your iPad Pro, you can still do  so 👌

With a trusty phone camera, and Galaxy Tab A with an Autodesk Sketchbook app I began tracing the lines off of my original sketch to make it cleaner, and somewhat easier to color. I remember while doing this rather relaxing activity, I would indulge myself to 80's Japanese pop songs on loop, pretty much the same with the process I had when I created the Plastic Love artwork.

Sooooo going back to my objectives, I remember before there had been a boom to the popularity of adult coloring books, and I remember how soothing and calming it was to color and let your mind wander. By the time you finished coloring you end up creating an artwork, and that itself is an accomplishment ♡ That indeed is a healthy activity for someone suffering from distress, anxiety, and other mental problems. Art helps you heal ❤

I really hope in my own little way, using my own art, I get to inspire people to create amazing artworks, and not letting their insecurities of not having enough 'skillz' or not being good enough to discourage them from picking up a paper and pencil, or any other art tools and start creating. Everyone started as a beginner, so cheer up if your creation don't initially look as impressive as what you envision. Eventually you'll be great in creating art by doing it habitually, and if you're doing it because you really want to improve yourself 👍 No one woke up one day and realized that they are a master of something, y'know 🤷

It took me 25 years to draw this way hahaha!

And for my last objective, I am really REEEEALLLY geared on contributing to our society, by donating. With our current situation, it may be a bit disheartening to see our government's lack of urgency and order, but on the other hand it is inspiring to see common folks helping each other out to rise above from this situation that we are into right now.

And before you could ask, NOPE I'm not selling this coloring book, but instead I'm releasing it for FREE! YEHEY! I want people to enjoy coloring as much as I do, and I want to smack a smile on your faces with my kawaii Desu Ne artworks hahaha! BUT, I also would like to ask for a teensy favor from you.

I want you to...

Yep! Currently there are a lot of organizations who are active in reaching to people who are gravely affected by the COVID-19, from our front liners to our countrymen who need assistance with basic necessities such as food and shelter. These organizations do a lot of things, from sourcing out and producing the PPEs our doctors and nurses wear whenever tending for COVID-10 positive patients, to giving relief for families who weren't provided assistance by their local government. With your donation, no matter how big or small it maybe, it will be a big help for these amazing people to carry on with their activities and missions.

You're probably wondering, who should I donate to? There are a lot of amazing people and organizations who initiated such activities, and here are some I know that you might want to help:

This one is an initiative of a my friend Erchelle Tonoike, and her batchmates from Manila Science high school (where my best friend Zai went to). What they do is they procure PPE's for medical frontliners, and as of this writing they are branching out their support to other hospitals as well.

This one on the other hand is an initiative of a colleague of mine, Jomarie Cabahug, and his org San Mateo Rover Scout Mission Circle -10, where they provide packed meals and snacks to frontliners, from those working in the medical field to volunteers who help in keeping our public places in order. They also help out in giving relief goods to families who badly need provision.

Or you could also give to CloudEats Food Drive, who also aim to provide hot meals for our frontliners. You may reach them here: CloudEats.ph

And there are soooo much more channels you could choose from 💓 Also, just to be clear donating is not limited to giving monetary or material aid, you can be of help by sharing your skills, talents, and time. Like me, I choose the route of giving some amount to orgs, as well as used my talents (in this case, drawing) in creating awareness for different causes. I hope you'll also be inspired to help others 🙂

I believe, no matter how small, what your heart can willingly give can definitely make an impact to other people's lives ♡ May you be a blessing to others!

Ohhhh and before I forget, here's the link to the downloadable coloring book: CLICK MEEEE! Enjoy mi loves!

Love Always,
Nicole

P.S.

I'm planning on doing another volume soon, let me know if you guys have any suggestions on what I should do next 😍 Besitos!
