Last August of 2018 I bought the biggest investment in my art artillery, and that is this beaut:
My precious
I admit up until now, I look at my Copic Sketch Cardcaptor Sakura set with a glimmer in my eyes! I mean just look at it, isn't it precious? I remember when I got this, I was so happy that I couldn't wait to go home to open this, that I immediately ripped off the packaging, and took this photo at the McDonalds at Canal City! Hahahaha excited much? 👌😂🙃

I mean I have always wanted to have me self a simple set of Copic Markers despite the fact that I have 0% expertise in rendering artworks with markers! What's worse, my desire to have Copics grew stronger upon finding out about this limited edition set, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Copic, where they decided to collaborate with CLAMP to further celebrate their glory. A simple intro of what is CLAMP: It is an all-girls group of Manga artists that gave the world great mangas such as Cardcaptor Sakura, and Chobits.
Yep, this masterpiece is from CLAMP 😻
Ok I'm just gushing and babbling now.

But for those who are curious, or are planning on buying this, Are Copic Markers really worth the coins?

Noted with thanks 👍
First, let's talk about the brand itself. Copic (コピック) is a Japanese brand of high-quality markers and related art materials made by Too Corporation which according to it's website HERE:

has been offering a wide variety of art/design-related services and supplies with world-class, cutting-edge technology.

I remember hearing about Copic markers when I was in college, where my architecture friends would jokingly say, "Alam mong mahal ka ng magulang mo pag madami Copics mo," or in English, "Your parents really love you if you have Copics," because they are so DARN EXPENSIIIIVE!

In case you want to pay a visit to their HQ after the quarantine hahaha!

Copic markers are available in a myriad of colors and different versions, namely Classic, Ciao, Wide, and what I have here is the Sketch. What they differ from each other are its brush tips, where the Classic comes in Broad and Fine Nib.

On the other hand, Copic Sketch is a hybrid of chisel tip...

 and brush tip...

... both makes a perfect combination for those who love to render with markers.

My Precious

What I find particularly nifty about this set is that it comes in a clear acrylic case with little dividers, so that it won't jiggle wildly. Also, it looks really sleek and professional, making me feel like I am an expert whenever I see this standing proudly in my work station-which I am 10000% definitely not 🙅

I am very fortunate to get this special edition Cardcaptor Sakura set, where it includes colors that CLAMP usually use in rendering the beloved character Sakura Kinomoto. As you can see in the photos, they have the colors BV25 Grayish Violet and BV23 Grayish Lavender for the dark hair, and E21 Soft Sun and E31 Brick Beige colors for the skin. I find it cool that this selection comes with colors that are suitable for drawing portraits, because it includes a number of shades perfect for coloring skin tone 👍

I used a planner's extra page for this, but the ink still seeped through
Just like working with different art media, not limited to Copic markers, it's important to use a certain type of paper when working with markers. I figured, given that there's a huge chance of fraying, refrain from using the markers in rough services, and yep that includes watercolor paper. Instead you can opt to use vellum paper, preferably with 200 GSM, but just remember that the color of the Copic Markers, or rather its ink, are strong enough to filter through the back of a 200 gsm vellum paper ☝ Take note of that mah friends!

Like this.
Anyhoo, let's move on to actual application of this on a fashion illustration.

Made use of my washi tape in creating a mixed media fashion illustration ❤

So how did I fare with in working with these babies to produce this fashion illustration? I know it sucks. For a beginner who is more adept with watercolor, I definitely needed more practice ☝ I still find it hard to blend colors seamlessly, since in order to blend you have to be precise with how many coats of color you'll put in your paper, which in watercolor's case you can just fill it in with more water to dilute the color, then swipe it off with tissue paper hoping the world will not see an evidence of your mistake🤞🤞🤞

One trick I have gotten from my countless hours of watching Youtube tutorials is the use of colored pencils. If you need more depth, but has limited Copic colors, you can opt to use color pencils. This one is a good suggestion, given that it made me revive my hardly used Faber Castell watercolor pencils 🤗

As I have mentioned in a joke awhile ago, Copics are expensive! One piece costs around Php 230 to Php 300 or around $4 to $6 depending on where you buy it- but of course it's a lot more affordable when you buy it in Japan. This baby cost me around Php 4,500 or roughly ¥ 9,000 when I bought the very last piece in Yamamoto Bumpodo *HALLELUJAHHH* (Blog about this experience HERE) which is a huge contrast to how much it is sold online, like here in Artillery Philippines:

Yup, I saved as much as Php 3,000!

Another good thing about Copics is that it's refillable! Imagine how much you'll actually be saving in the long run! Imagine if this is the case, you won't need to throw out the markers once they have dried out. Efficient? Check! Economical? Check! Environmentally-friendly? TRIPLE CHECK!

Soooooo, with all that said and done, are Copic Markers worth the $$$ or the ¥¥¥?

Copics are expensive, yes I have to stress it again, but it's an investment. I think before actually buying it, you have to think things through on how much use you can get out of it. While it feels really nice to have a glorious set of Copics sitting proudly on your desk, you have to deliberate if YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO USE IT. Only then you'll get to have you ROI, or Return of Investment from these babies- and you'll definitely have to get your ROI from it. But if you just want it just because its copics? Hmmm, better spend it on something you'd really use.

I have no qualms regarding its quality, because to be honest Copics really are among the best in its field in the art world. It's quality truly justifies its price; hefty may it be, but it's definitely worth - Just use it, I have heard a lot of horror stories where unused Copic markers tend to dry out 😟

Have I helped you in your deliberations whether to get one now or... later? 😉

Love Always,
Nicole ♡

Perhaps that's the main reason why I can't seem to move on from my trip to Japan last week, is because I was able to taste a bit of heaven in the land of the rising sun- and with the best brown rice!
Me
While the whole of Japan seems to be Heaven overall [psst their McDonald's has the best Orange Juice hahaha!], there's this particular place in Fukuoka that made my heart so full, it almost burst into shards of unicorn goodness! Am I referring to the place with the best Tonkatsu? Not really, but dayuuuum I equally cannot get over their brown rice! HAHAHA! Ok, kidding aside, let me show you what Heaven is...

Yeeeeessssss Henny! Yamamoto Bumpodo is the best place in the whole of Fukuoka for people who loves to surround themselves with art materials! This amazing store boasts 2 storey full of art goodies, having the 2nd part devoted more on sculptures and paintings. Yamamoto Bumpodo is near Akasaka station, which is the left side of Tenjin station. You could also go there coming from Ohorikoen station, if you're coming from a day trip in Ohori park- like what we did!

I think it's also important to take note that they close early, having official business hours at 10:00 am to 7:00 pm only. With that, my only advise for you should you wish to visit this wonderland is to allot at least an hour or two when visiting, in this case you'll get to really see the shelves, and also be able to compare prices. Unlike what happened to us, we were able to arrive here at around 6:45 pm already (which explains why the store looks like it's about to close), because we came all the way from Ohori Park after sailing a duck boat (Will explain that in separate post haha!). Having only 15 minutes to shop, the pressure is just too much to handle! Usually when I go to art stores, I have to have at least an hour to check the shelves, and to really think through what I have to buy, however in this case I just go with...

Reptar is my spirit animal

So, what's inside this majestic place? (Apologizing in advance for the blurry pics, because I came in like a storm when I arrived).

There are a bunch of watercolor tubes you can go crazy at! They also sell a lot of different waterbrush brands, like kuretake, zig, pentel, and a whole lot more.

look at the Sakura Petit Color palette! They seem really identical with the Sakura Koi Pocketfield watercolors, which are available here in The Philippines!

But the fun doesn't stop there! Just when you thought that's already everything, you get to see a corridor leading to something even more majestic!

No, it's not the toilet- but hey, it's clean I tell yah hahaha! So what's on the other side?

Yes kuya, flaunt it!

Pigmeeeents! You can use these powders to make watercolors, or even make your own paper basing on whatever color you desire. Aside from that, you'll also be greeted by these:

The Starry Colors Gansai Tambi set of 6 retails for only 1,200 yen, or around 500+ pesos only! Here in the Philippines it goes for almost 800-900 pesos! While the pastel ones are around 600+ pesos only, and so far aren't available in The Philippines yet!
Me freaking out as I get everything I could from the shelves
But my world, and my arms, stopped with what I saw next. Originally I intend on buying watercolors and brushes, but what I saw next made me abandon ship.

Shaky hands because of too much feels.
I DIE

This made this place heaven, ladies and gentlemen! I just remember this running joke I have with my architect friends, where the true sign that your parents love you is when you have a lot of Copic Markers for rendering. For those who aren't that familiar with Copic, Copic is a brand of really amazing, high-end markers. Usually a piece of Copic marker goes as much as 250+ pesos or around $ 5-8 *insert crying face*, so you can just imagine how expensive it would be to buy a set! Surprisingly, this limited edition Card Captor Sakura Copic Sketch has been a 'steal' given that it is sold around Php 7,000++ or perhaps $ 120-140 in some online stores, but in Yamamoto Bumpodo this retails for 9,800 yen, or roughly around 4,800+ Pesos!!!!

Anyway, to finish this post, let me summarize some tips and FYIs should you ever find yourself visiting this heavenly place:
1. Go early! Don't go there 15 minutes before closing time! Despite the fact that they have really helpful and patient sales people who are willing to give you 5 more minutes after 7:00 pm, please do me a favor and go early!
2. Expect to buy a lot of stuff! They have from pastels to watercolors, and even different papers, washis, clays, and sooooo much more! With that...
3. Allot a big 'art hoarding' budget, otherwise, you'll have buyer's remorse if you don't buy what you want.
3. Listen to your gut! If it screams that you buy that item, go for it! Remember, you may not go back to Yamamato Bumpodo soon!
4. They accept credit cards too!
5. If you are tooo excited about this, check their site here ♥

In the end, I was able to buy a few things hahaha! I intentionally did not buy a lot, because I'll be visiting the art shop mothership in Japan sooooooon ♥ Better watch out for that!

Love, Always!

Nicole ♥
