Another plan that had successfully cross over from our group chat 💖

Last September 2024, we have successfully put into fruition something Zai, Trizia, and I have been planning for months: A trip to Japan! A year before our trip, we went to South Korea during end of winter, so why not go to Japan during end of Summer which is still horrid hot.

OSAKA-NARA-KYOTO-NAGOYA

That's our route, where we landed in Osaka, spent a day with the deers in Nara, spent the weekend in Kyoto, and had our last part in Nagoya for a total of 10 days- and to be honest, it still feels a bitin or in English, not enough.

WELCOME TO OSAKA

We left Manila at around 2pm, but since we are all anxious travellers (seeing lots of those immigration horror stories) we all arrived at the airport at around 8:00 a.m. on September 10. Being earlier is good since we were able to have lunch and charge our devices prior to flying. Since I booked my ticket earlier than my friends, I was separated from them in the plane, but the upside was I got the emergency exit seat with loads of leg space.

The first thing we did after navigating our hotel was search for something to eat, and what better way to introduce my friends to Japan's culture than leading them to Japan's treasure, Matsuya hahaha! After having our first meal in Japan Very monumental we decided to check out Dotonburi and look at the sights.

Spidey's butt is a sight.

Given that we are quite exhausted from the flight, we did not spend much time outside and instead decide to drop by a conbini, buy our breakfast for the next morning, and call it a night.

So the next morning...

For me, to manage my budget every time I travel, I make sure to just buy breakfast from a convenience store, or better, a supermarket - preferably at night when a lot of the food is already discounted. While food in Japan is not as exorbitantly priced as in Hong Kong, little expenses has its way of compounding hahaha! So it's a must to be strategic with your meals.

Anyway, for our first day, we decided to make the most of our Osaka Amazing pass (that also works as an unlimited pass for subway trains) by going to key places in Osaka, namely: Osaka Museum, Osaka Castle, and Tsutenkaku Tower. This is the optimal route considering they are quite near to each other.

When we visited the Osaka museum, there weren't a lot of people, which is cool since we were able to really take our time to check out key artifacts that shaped Osaka into what it is now. There's also an archaeological portion in the museum with a bunch of mini activities, like piecing together a broken vase that took us quite a while to finish, vs. the guy next to us who did it alone, and a mini sand excavation site for kids.

Some odd 500 meters away is the fortress that houses the Osaka castle, and other smaller "modern" buildings like Miraiza. Inside Miraiza were a couple of restaurants and cafes, souvenir shops, a toy museum, and a bar upstairs where you can get an amazing view of the Osaka castle. Just a disclaimer, the bar upstairs's menu can be quite pricey, but with the view, I say it's definitely worth it.

Since our last meal was at 6 a.m., we decided to have our lunch inside Miraiza - at 3 p.m.! During that time, since it's still technically summertime in Japan, it was so hot that almost all of the restaurants were fully occupied, mainly because of the air conditioner, except for the Landmark Square restaurant.

Landmark Square is quite chic, and on the more expensive side of a type of restaurant, which explains why only a few people are dining here. I ordered their set meal, which includes pumpkin soup, tomato & mushroom risotto, and a glass of cold Coca Cola. Was it good? It's nice. Will I recommend it? Not really.

Since we are already inside Miraiza and we won't be able to go inside the castle anymore (they have a cut-off at 4:00 p.m. 😔), we decided to check out the Kaiyodo Figure Museum. With our Osaka Amazing Pass, we didn't pay the admission fee to this museum. From what I've researched, this museum is a private collection of an individual, which explains the randomness of some of the toys and figures in the museum.

Oh, of course, it would be a shame to waste the golden hour without an impromptu photo session around Osaka Castle's grounds, right?

It was my first time visiting Tsutenkaku Tower, and unlike the other towers in Japan, this place felt really retro. It wasn't as scary high as Umeda, but the 360-degree view is still stunning. They also have a souvenir store where I was able to buy a ref magnet, as Ken had insisted that I buy.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS DAY!

I love Universal Studios Japan- and in general, I love amusement parks! So it's no surprise that I make sure we spend a day queueing here.

I don't know why, but whenever I go to USJ, I go through the park counterclockwise, which means The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is the first area I explore.

We were lucky to get an entry pass to the Super Nintendo World! After spending some time at the Wizarding World and munching on pizza at the pier located in the Jaws' area, we go straight to Super Nintendo World and lined up for the Bowser ride.

As per usual, the queues are crazy long! But unlike in other rides, at least this one is indoors, which means air conditioning~ I must say I enjoyed this ride the 2nd time around vs. when I rode it a year ago. I remember having such a hard time aligning my headgear with my glasses, so I spent 60% of the time fussing about my headgear instead of actually racing hahaha!

Since we visited the park on a lovely September day, of course, tumultuous rain is inevitable. At around 3pm, it started raining... HARD! The whole park had to stop the rides, so parkgoers were forced to find shelter and rest. Chairs and benches are not exactly abundant in the park, so we were left with no choice but to find a covered area without any chairs and just sit on the floor. Due to the heat and fatigue, I even ended up sleeping in a fetal position!

After an hour, the rain subsided, and the whole park was business as usual once again.

We actually went back to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to ride the Forbidden Forest ride and grab some Butterbeer. Eventually, we decided to check out the other side of the park and noticed that there weren't a lot of lines going to the 4D ride, so we tried it out! At the time, the theme was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and the ride has an objective: to deliver a magical sword. Unfortunately, I haven't watched this anime yet, so I have no idea what's happening hahaha! But regardless, it was a thrilling ride- a rollercoaster one, that is! Honestly, I did not know it was a rollercoaster ride. This was my first time riding it, as I always opted to skip it due to the long lines! I guess the long lines are there for a reason.

NARA DAY + ONE LAST NIGHT IN OSAKA!

Another first  for me was visiting Nara. What exactly can you see in Nara?

Deers!

Nara is an hour train ride away from Osaka, so it's a place we cannot miss out on during our trip. We visited the park with all the bowing deer, but they won't bow at you unless you give them a biscuit. At the front of the park, some small stores were selling thin biscuits that looked like digestives for around ¥200-300 for a pack.

Do take note of the following anecdotes you need to know before embarking here:
🦌 The park smells like manure, because lo and behold, the deer poop everywhere! So make sure you don't wear white shoes, because there's 80% chance you'll step on one.
🦌 Some deer were a little bit more aggressive. How aggressive? They'll bite your butt!
🦌  September to November is the deer's mating season, so the males are extra aggressive during this period. Avoid deer with big horns, because high likely that those are stags.
🦌  When you feed the deer, better to get one biscuit at a time. If the deer see you holding a stack of biscuits, there's a high chance that you'll get swarmed, and in panic, will throw away the biscuits just to make them go away- I saw this happen with a beautiful lady at the park.

After feeding deer and checking out nearby temples, Zai led us to this famous mochi store, where these old Japanese men show how it's done. It was a spectacle, so of course, people flocked to the storefront to capture it with their phones. On the other hand, while the queue is still not too long, I decided to buy myself one and see if the hype is worth it.

The mochi is so soft and chewy, and inside it was filled with red bean paste. I'm not the biggest fan or red bean, or any beans, but I enjoyed this! I was about to buy a full pack of 4s to eat later, however, the queue is building, and we have a dinner reservation to catch 😔

By the way, it was Trizia's birthday today! To celebrate it, she treated us to the Final Fantasy Forza Cafe in Osaka! Yes, we arrived in time for the dinner reservation! We had burgers, pastas, takoyaki, and cute, fun, bubbly drinks. For every order, they give out these cute Final Fantasy trinkets/collectibles, and since it's Trizia's treat (and Zai and I weren't fans), she got to take home these souvenirs 💓

After having our early dinner, we decided to head back to our hotel to rest and freshen up. Good thing our place was a kilometer away from Dotonbori!

Yes, we had our dinner, but c'mon, when you're in Dotonbori, the only thing you should be doing is taking a photo with Glico man and eating!

Another epic first for me: Karaoke in Japan! It was way better than the Karaoke/Videoke bars here in the Philippines! Unlike how here in the Philippines, where you pay per hour per room, in Round One, you pay per person. Each person also has unlimited access to sodas, teas, coffee, juices, and slushies! Although they require each to order something from the menu, I still enjoy Karaoke more here vs. in The Philippines (I mean, no one really likes soggy fries, haha!)

And that's it for our Osaka run! Writing this blog post only made me miss Japan even more! I badly want to go back to Universal Studios and ride the Forbidden Forest ride in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or eat a scorching hot, fresh-from-the-grill Takoyaki in Dotonbori! I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get to visit Japan again this year! Wish me luck!

Love Always,
Nicole 💓

Ok, to clear the air technically I've been to China before *ehem* Hongkong *ehem* but not in mainland China.

I wasn't expecting that I'll be able to go to Shanghai, China at all!

2026 Nicole here writing about the misadventures of 2025, let me narrate about what happened exactly a year ago. As I have written in this blog a couple of moons ago, I also went to Thailand for work. Then a couple of hours after, I was transported to China...  also, for work 💥 Did I complain? NOT AT ALL!

I even received Roses from Ken upon arriving... only to leave again in a few hours for China.

Looking back, it was such a crazy week last year! I've had 2 back-to-back work trips, one in Bangkok, Thailand for a brand summit, and one in Shanghai, China for a TikTok Study Tour. I remember I arrived in Manila, Philippines from Bangkok, Thailand at around 1 am on March 31, then I have to fly out from Manila, Philippines to Shanghai, China at 8:30 am on the same day. 🛬

A few days before my trips, I have already packed 2 luggage, 1 for Thailand and 1 for China, considering that I won't have any more time to pack when I arrive from Thailand- and this is a good decision from my end because when I got home from the airport, I was exhausted! I no longer have any energy nor bandwidth to clear my luggage of all the things I've bought from Thailand nor even decide how many underwear I should bring! When I got home, I quickly took a shower, set my alarm at 4:30 a.m., charged my devices, and go to sleep. Ken even joked that it was the best 6 hours because we only had 6 hours to spend together before I have to fly again. I guess this is how celebs feel when they barely have time to spend with their loved ones because of their jet-setting lifestyle LOL😅 wow amfeeling!

Despite being exhausted, I was able to arrive at the airport in time, early enough to buy myself coffee before boarding. The flight from Manila to Shanghai is roughly around 3 hours only, so it's perfect for a short nap-which is also perfect for me because the in-flight entertainment in my seat doesn't work 😕 I swear, Philippine Airlines need to replace or fix some of their airplanes!

We arrived in Shanghai, China and was immediately greeted by the 10 degree Celsius weather! It was a stark difference from the hot and humid weather of Bangkok, but I gladly embraced this because like Elsa, "The cold never bothered me anyway!"

We stayed at the Pullman hotel, and our room is huge! We have 2 single beds (that are quite high lol), massive windows covered by heavy curtains, and a 75 inch TV that only has channels showing movies in Mandarin. Since this was a company trip, I have no idea how much it costed, but I estimate around 8k pesos. I mean, for the big space, the huge tub and yummy breakfast, not bad! But for some reason, I preferred our hotel in Bangkok, Avani Sukhumvit more.

First impression of Shanghai- It reminded me of Seoul, Korea with a lot of European-inspired architecture scattered everywhere. But unlike in Seoul, Shanghai surprised me with a lot of tech-related details, like they'll just look at you blankly if you pay with cash, hence it's a must that you have Alipay or at least a GCash app installed in your phone.

Also, regarding the VPN situation, prior to flying to China I subscribed to a VPN service for a month to ensure I'll still be able to connect to Facebook and other apps aside from WeChat lol. But apparently this is not necessary if you avail of roaming data via Globe- I only found out about this when Ken went to Guangzhou in October 🤷 Oh well, at least I was able to use the VPN to access certain shows in Netflix US for a month hahaha!

Walking around the Bund!

One thing I also noticed are the number of freelance photographers, they are scattered around the area offering to take professional-level photos for like 10 edited photos (on the spot!) for 10 Chinese Yuan! I saw in TikTok how the outputs are usually high quality, but I passed from getting one since I'm not really feeling too confident this day hahaha!

Eventually, we wound up at Nanjin Road and end up eating massive Xiao Long Baos as big as our faces! The one I ordered was made from Crab Roe, and it was delicious! At first, I was confused why I was given 2 straws, apparently it wasn't only for the can of coke I ordered hahaha!

Since we are at the mecha of Pop Mart and other toy collectible brands, I couldn't pass the chance to buy something! I did not buy a Labubu, but instead I got a Disney blind box plushie instead- which I end up gifting to my sister. Since it's still the first day, I only bought one to test the waters and pacing my spending LOL

We also visited Yu Garden which is a hotspot for having photoshoots. I saw a couple of girls wearing traditional Chinese costumes having their pictorials in different parts of this establishment, and hey, I can't blame them! This place is so beautiful! I am not sure if it's as striking in the morning, considering the lights do help set the tone of the place. Oh well, I guess the only way to find out is to go back to Shanghai someday 😉

My midnight snack while watching Jack Whitehall's TV Show Travels with My Father

After a full year, I feel more determined to go back to Shanghai, and hopefully with Ken. I was actually surprised how Shanghai was very different from what I envisioned it, mainly like Hong Kong, but nope, it was so much better!

One of the things in my wish list now is to watch an F1 race in Shanghai... then go buy the Song bag in Songmont, and take a bunch of photos at the Yu Garden! There are more things I would love to do in Shanghai, and even in other cities in China, but this point, all I can say is "hopefully someday" 😊

Love Always,
Nicole

Aside from getting proposed to, this is one of the highlights of this trip!

I remember when we had finalized our plane tickets and hotel, the next thing that immediately came to mind was that I NEEDED to score tickets to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, The Making of Harry Potter wow that's a mouthful in Tokyo! I immediately checked out Klook to reserve a ticket on one of the days we will be in Tokyo. Lo and behold, all AUGUST 2023 dates were fully booked! Mind you, this was in June 2023, 2 months before our actual trip!

Iyak malala!

But then, I remember, Corazon did not raise a quitter for a daughter! For sure, Klook isn't the only platform that sells tickets, right? So, I checked other similar platforms like Klook, unfortunately, I was faced with the same fate, no more available tickets for the dates that we will be in Japan! But before I could continue my ugly crying in the corner, I decided to go to the main source, which is the official website, and see if they still have open slots for August. Luckily, they still have it for the week that we will be visiting, BUT it's so limited! I quickly signed up on the site, whipped out my credit card, and prayed hard that this boldness of mine would be favored by the Gods.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the website is in Japanese and without any English translations!
Just imagine if I accidentally booked August 19... 2024 hahaha!

Arigathanks!

I was definitely favored by the Gods! The payment pushed through, and I was able to secure the tickets! Now, I can breathe hahaha!

Fast forward to the actual trip!

Getting there was relatively easy. I remember we took a train from Shinjuku station going to Nerima, where the Harry Potter studio is located. Once you arrive to the nearest train station, you'll spot A LOT of lamp post ads and other out-of-home (OOH) wow as a marketer tayo dyan haha! collaterals scattered all around to assure you that The Harry Potter studio is nearby and that you INDEED got off the right train station. After about 300m, you'll see a HUGE billboard of the golden trio from the Chamber of Secrets era, and from there you just follow the path.

Before entering, you'll need to secure your e-ticket with the QR code to be able to scan your way to one of the turnstiles- Yes, no need to bring a paper copy of your ticket. Once inside, you'll see this HUGE Hungarian Horntail, and a place where you can store your valuables. From what I remember, you're not allowed to bring big bags hence they encourage those who brought backpacks to store it in the lockers. Also, upon entering they'll offer you an earpiece guide (like those in certain museums) for a fee. Unfortunately, during our trip all English guides were already depleted 😓

No Turkey leg tho :(

The lounge area where you can wait for your entry time OR rest your feet after the tour.

An important tidbit: The tickets are timed, which means you can't just enter the tour area whenever you like. When we visited, our entry time is scheduled at 4:00 p.m., so despite arriving at 2:30 p.m. we'll have to wait until our time to be allowed inside.

Good thing we have enough time to wait, because we used that to grab a late lunch in their restaurant. The restaurant offers a variety of meals, from Italian like spaghetti to British Fish and Chips. We ordered the pasta and some ribs; it was good but kind of expensive-something to take note if you are planning to have a meal here.

The first thing you'll see is this hall showing all the Harry Potter posters. There are also posters from different countries like China and South Korea. It really feels nostalgic seeing them again after years of not seeing any Harry Potter poster in the cinemas 😥

I'm not going to spoil a magical part of this tour, but to give a little snippet, the transition going to the great hall was magical! Once in the great hall, you'll see a lot of costumes of beloved characters and props used during filming.

The Harry Potter Studio tour feels like going to a museum, where every detail about the world-building and even the technical parts were divulged. It was separated in different parts, from what's inside Hogwarts, even to the other magical places in the world of Harry Potter like the Ministry of Magic and Diagon Alley. Every area is painstakingly accurate! If you love taking photos and imagining that you are a Hogwarts student, you'll definitely enjoy roaming around every corner.

Aside from the whole tour being an amazing backdrop for cosplaying as a Hogwarts student, there were a lot of interactive activities to try! For example, In the potions classroom you can take a video as if you're stirring a cauldron by using your wand to manipulate the spoon or sandok? My favorite activities were taking a video as if we were in a moving picture, and the other one was being part of the audience from the iconic Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Quidditch match!

In my breakthrough role hahaha!

New career! HAHAHA!

Another cool area of the studio tour was the backlot which has the #4 Privet Drive, Hagrid's hut, and the Knight Bus! It's cool that you are allowed to go inside the Dursley's home and see that tiny room below the stairs where Harry grew up in.

Also, the backlot also serves as a rest area where you can buy snacks or enjoy a glass of Butterbeer ☝ Is it the same taste as the one sold in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Yes! But the glass they come in (which you can also bring home) is different vs. the ones from the Wizarding World- If my memory serves me right, I think the ones here sold in the Studio Tour is cheaper vs. in Universal Studios.

The finale was the huge Hogwarts diorama that you have 360-degree access of. I remember Ken even tearing up when he saw this hehe! I promise, this part is so majestic!

A couple of steps from the diorama is the HUUUUUUGE shop where you can buy a ton of Harry Potter merch! Is it the same merch as sold in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios? Actually, no. It's different, and they even have MinaLima products like stationeries, books, postcards, and posters! They also have Tokyo exclusive merch like tote bags and hoodies!

We capped it off with some drinks and treats from the Frog Cafe (which was quite pricey, but meh, YOLO! HAHAHA!).

Like I have said earlier, this is a highlight from this trip! I have been a fan since I was 8 years old, and to be given a chance to see this and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are things I have only dreamed of! Truly thankful, indeed!

Here's wishing and ✨manifesting✨ to see other notable Harry Potter locations in the future!

Love always,
Nicole ❤
