Before we finally move on from Tokyo I mean, will I ever move one from such a magical place??? I decided to do a pahabol post, particularly about Arts!

I've probably mentioned Sekaido hundreds of time in my blog, that if I could get 10 pesos per mention I would have enough funds to buy myself a Kate Spade bag hahahahaha! But we don't leave in a world where I get paid by mentioning that piece of heaven, so let's proceed on a little discovery I stumbled upon during my last day in Tokyo- when I went there October of last year!

Tucked inside the chic mall Lumine in Shinjuku, one could not expect to stumble upon an art supply store-and no, this is not a branch of Tokyu Hands. In the myriad of clothing and accessories shop at the 6th store, you'll find the store Tools.

I'm not kidding, the store's name really is Tools hahaha! In fairness, the name fits well with the store because inside you'll see a lot of art tools you'll want to burn your Yens at!

While Sekaido is just a couple of steps away from Lumine if you don't have the luxury of time to go there, Tools has a surprisingly wide range of art materials, particularly their calligraphy and stationery items. In comparison to Sekaido, Tools have a couple of brands from outside of Japan, and even stuff that came from smaller players of the art material's world.

One brand that I haven't seen much of in Sekaido is Sailor, which is a brand of pens that also carries calligraphy markers in their portfolio. If you're like me, who likes to try different brands by buying at least one from their line, I think you'll fall in love with Tools, too!

JUMBO!

If you're into creating sketches and illustrations, you'll bound to find something that will tickle your fancy here. They have your standard Staedtlers that come in regular and JUMBO size, they also have a couple of Tombow mechanical pencils here and there, and some brands that I have only seen there!

As I have mentioned, they also have a surprisingly wide variety of stationery products! You'll see oodles of rolls of washi tapes that come in different sizes and different prints! Tools is actually pretty small at a first glance, but maaaan they are stocked with the good stuff!

Speaking of good stuff, YEP, THEY HAVE COPICS! I think I did mention in my Sekaido trip blogs that while they seem to have EVERYTHING your art-crazed heart beats for, they do not carry Copics. Sure they have a myriad of marker brands such as Uni Posca, Tombow, Sakura, Kuretake, and Sai, but nothing compares to Copics!

What's even amazing is that they not only carry the different kinds of Copic pens, but they also sell books and activity sheets if you want to master your rendering skills with your brand new set of 24's Copic Sketch ♡

Look at those activity books, they feel like a slightly more adult coloring book! Tools seem to have everything you need if you want to start collecting Copics because they also sell bags where you can store your essential markers.

As for the price of their Copics I noticed that it's pretty similar to the pricing if you buy it in Yamamoto Bumpodo (In Fukuoka), or in some selected Tokyu Hands branches.

The only setbacks I have noticed in shopping in Tools are:
💔 They don't have as much variety in the watercolor department as they do with the markers. If you're looking for some Kissho glittery watercolor palette, go and take the extra steps to Sekaido.
💔 When I was in Tokyo in February I noticed that Sekaido had a shop wide sale on EVERYTHING, and it helps a lot if you apply for a membership card, but unlike in Tools, while they have a membership program too it only applies to free 2-hour parking in Lumine- which is useless if you're a tourist in Tokyo.

But aside these two, I actually like Tools enough to buy a ¥400 washi tape.

I know, Php 200 for a washi tape if a waste of money!
Lastly, if you also get easily overwhelmed I suggest going to Tools first then once you're ready, go ahead and embark on your journey to Sekaido haha! 🛒🛍 Happy Shopping!

Love Always,

Nicole ❤

Last August of 2018 I bought the biggest investment in my art artillery, and that is this beaut:
My precious
I admit up until now, I look at my Copic Sketch Cardcaptor Sakura set with a glimmer in my eyes! I mean just look at it, isn't it precious? I remember when I got this, I was so happy that I couldn't wait to go home to open this, that I immediately ripped off the packaging, and took this photo at the McDonalds at Canal City! Hahahaha excited much? 👌😂🙃

I mean I have always wanted to have me self a simple set of Copic Markers despite the fact that I have 0% expertise in rendering artworks with markers! What's worse, my desire to have Copics grew stronger upon finding out about this limited edition set, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Copic, where they decided to collaborate with CLAMP to further celebrate their glory. A simple intro of what is CLAMP: It is an all-girls group of Manga artists that gave the world great mangas such as Cardcaptor Sakura, and Chobits.
Yep, this masterpiece is from CLAMP 😻
Ok I'm just gushing and babbling now.

But for those who are curious, or are planning on buying this, Are Copic Markers really worth the coins?

Noted with thanks 👍
First, let's talk about the brand itself. Copic (コピック) is a Japanese brand of high-quality markers and related art materials made by Too Corporation which according to it's website HERE:

has been offering a wide variety of art/design-related services and supplies with world-class, cutting-edge technology.

I remember hearing about Copic markers when I was in college, where my architecture friends would jokingly say, "Alam mong mahal ka ng magulang mo pag madami Copics mo," or in English, "Your parents really love you if you have Copics," because they are so DARN EXPENSIIIIVE!

In case you want to pay a visit to their HQ after the quarantine hahaha!

Copic markers are available in a myriad of colors and different versions, namely Classic, Ciao, Wide, and what I have here is the Sketch. What they differ from each other are its brush tips, where the Classic comes in Broad and Fine Nib.

On the other hand, Copic Sketch is a hybrid of chisel tip...

 and brush tip...

... both makes a perfect combination for those who love to render with markers.

My Precious

What I find particularly nifty about this set is that it comes in a clear acrylic case with little dividers, so that it won't jiggle wildly. Also, it looks really sleek and professional, making me feel like I am an expert whenever I see this standing proudly in my work station-which I am 10000% definitely not 🙅

I am very fortunate to get this special edition Cardcaptor Sakura set, where it includes colors that CLAMP usually use in rendering the beloved character Sakura Kinomoto. As you can see in the photos, they have the colors BV25 Grayish Violet and BV23 Grayish Lavender for the dark hair, and E21 Soft Sun and E31 Brick Beige colors for the skin. I find it cool that this selection comes with colors that are suitable for drawing portraits, because it includes a number of shades perfect for coloring skin tone 👍

I used a planner's extra page for this, but the ink still seeped through
Just like working with different art media, not limited to Copic markers, it's important to use a certain type of paper when working with markers. I figured, given that there's a huge chance of fraying, refrain from using the markers in rough services, and yep that includes watercolor paper. Instead you can opt to use vellum paper, preferably with 200 GSM, but just remember that the color of the Copic Markers, or rather its ink, are strong enough to filter through the back of a 200 gsm vellum paper ☝ Take note of that mah friends!

Like this.
Anyhoo, let's move on to actual application of this on a fashion illustration.

Made use of my washi tape in creating a mixed media fashion illustration ❤

So how did I fare with in working with these babies to produce this fashion illustration? I know it sucks. For a beginner who is more adept with watercolor, I definitely needed more practice ☝ I still find it hard to blend colors seamlessly, since in order to blend you have to be precise with how many coats of color you'll put in your paper, which in watercolor's case you can just fill it in with more water to dilute the color, then swipe it off with tissue paper hoping the world will not see an evidence of your mistake🤞🤞🤞

One trick I have gotten from my countless hours of watching Youtube tutorials is the use of colored pencils. If you need more depth, but has limited Copic colors, you can opt to use color pencils. This one is a good suggestion, given that it made me revive my hardly used Faber Castell watercolor pencils 🤗

As I have mentioned in a joke awhile ago, Copics are expensive! One piece costs around Php 230 to Php 300 or around $4 to $6 depending on where you buy it- but of course it's a lot more affordable when you buy it in Japan. This baby cost me around Php 4,500 or roughly ¥ 9,000 when I bought the very last piece in Yamamoto Bumpodo *HALLELUJAHHH* (Blog about this experience HERE) which is a huge contrast to how much it is sold online, like here in Artillery Philippines:

Yup, I saved as much as Php 3,000!

Another good thing about Copics is that it's refillable! Imagine how much you'll actually be saving in the long run! Imagine if this is the case, you won't need to throw out the markers once they have dried out. Efficient? Check! Economical? Check! Environmentally-friendly? TRIPLE CHECK!

Soooooo, with all that said and done, are Copic Markers worth the $$$ or the ¥¥¥?

Copics are expensive, yes I have to stress it again, but it's an investment. I think before actually buying it, you have to think things through on how much use you can get out of it. While it feels really nice to have a glorious set of Copics sitting proudly on your desk, you have to deliberate if YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO USE IT. Only then you'll get to have you ROI, or Return of Investment from these babies- and you'll definitely have to get your ROI from it. But if you just want it just because its copics? Hmmm, better spend it on something you'd really use.

I have no qualms regarding its quality, because to be honest Copics really are among the best in its field in the art world. It's quality truly justifies its price; hefty may it be, but it's definitely worth - Just use it, I have heard a lot of horror stories where unused Copic markers tend to dry out 😟

Have I helped you in your deliberations whether to get one now or... later? 😉

Love Always,
Nicole ♡

Lo and behold we are now on Season 3 of Enhanced Community Quarantine here in Manila, and as far as I have read about the Covid-19 situation here in our country, our average case per day ranks up at 150! All the more reasons we have to take care of ourselves, and stay at home!

With the additional time spent at home, we have more time to discover new activities and revisit some old habits, which is perfect because the coloring book series now has a volume 2!

As mentioned in my previous post, I decided to continue doing this coloring books to further inspire people to use art as a therapy, and to encourage people to use their skills to help out others. For the volume 1 of my coloring book, I did mention my objectives behind that project, and one of it is to urge people to donate to various efforts battling the fight against COVID-19, and well I suppose this one is no different from that one.

If you still can, please do!

Nooooow, what's new with the volume 2? Aside from the theme, this coloring book is a collaboration with one of my closest peers from college, Alex Esmeralda! Ever since college days Alex has been amazing in creating digital artworks featuring anime characters- heck she was one of those people who inspired me to have a Wacom Intuos and improve my skills in digital arts!

For this coloring book we each chose different characters that'll show how show some of our beloved characters gain inspirations from the other side of the pond, west to east, east to west. Alex drew such characters like Starfire from the Titans borrowing Rin Tohsaka's aesthetic, and 2 other equally stunning artworks.

I mean, just look at these pretty ladies! Alex did a fantastic job, indeed!
As for me, I did a mash-up of Princess Bubblegum and Chibiusa from Sailor Moon, and D.Va (from Overwatch) as Jill Valentine. To be honest I am still testing the waters when it comes to drawing illustrations entirely using digital means only. Usually I would draw something using traditional media (e.g. watercolor paper, and a student grade mechanical pencil) first, then I would trace it using an old Samsung Tab A with Autodesk Sketch app. But for these I created 2 of my artworks solely via digital means only, which was a fun challenge for me.

The biggest challenge for me in creating these artworks would be the weapons. For Princess Bubblegum x Chibimoon, I drew a Moon stick which was actually used by Sailormoon, and not Chibiusa hahaha OOPSIE! As for D.Va, I drew her Light Gun, rather than opting for a pistol that Jill Valentine would have used in the Resident Evil games.

MOON HEALING ESCALATAION ATTACKKKKK!

NERF THIS!
Like the volume 1, this new coloring book is ABSOLUTELY FREE! So you may download it via the link HERE, and you can either have it printed and color it using whatever means you want- if you want to paint it with coffee, then go ahead hahaha! You can also opt to color it via Photoshop, Procreate, or whatever app you have, YOU DO YOU! 👍

Also, if you are interested in donating and helping out, you may check out my blogpost about it HERE for more details ♡

Lastly, you may also check out Alex's artworks at rekii-art.tumblr.com ♡ A huuuuge thanks to Alex for sharing her talents for this project!

Enjoy adding more color to your life!

Love Always,

Nicole💓
