I figured I wouldn't be able to use Miss Saigon references anywhere else, so might as well go full ham until the well has dried up much like the yakult references

... and since I no longer remember all of the happenings that day, let me just dump all the photos here, and end it with a list of things that I have either learned while in Vietnam, or things I badly miss there a.k.a. food ☝🖒🤔😂

Unlike its neighbouring countries, Vietnam doesn't have über modern and sleek sky scrapers, instead they have french-inspired mid-rise buildings, most look a bit worn out, which in turn gives it an old worldly charm. Like its neighbouring countries, it has such a rich culture that you are abundant in the city of Hanoi.

For those who are thinking of going there, I have a few musings that might help you out ☝😘
1. Things in Hanoi are very affordable. Now, now, I am not a loaded gal, but during my stay in Hanoi, money wasn't my biggest worry. If you are from the PH (like me!), your 5k will go a loooong way-but of course, better bring some spare for shopping!
2. Their food is magnificent!!!! I remember when we were there, I always find myself wondering why the Vietnamese are so thin, and I suppose I sort of gotten the answer when I was able to have a bite of authentic Vietnamese cuisines! My absolute fave are Banh Mis with different kinds of fillings!
3. While on the subject of food, if you are quite a picky eater (or found comfort having a westernized palate), don't fret because they have Burger King and KFC there- but c'mon, why not try at least a bite of some Bun Cha! Don't knock 'til you try it.
4. Vietnamese coffee 👏👏👏 but a little PSA, they are quite strong! So if your have an acidic stomach, or worst GERD, better stock up on antacyd ☝
5. Accommodations are fairly affordable, but don't expect having a spatial abode... but then again, it's not as bad as budget hotels in Hong Kong 🤔🤔🤔
6. You must go to Ha Long Bay! It is a UNESCO site for a reason, and I am certain you won't regret seeing all of its magnificence with your own eyes.
7. While motorcycles are their ultimate go-to transpo, that doesn't mean you can only go to places via a bike. They have taxis, but I prefer Grab more, so you better install Grab before going there.
8. Their malls aren't as spectacular as the ones we have back in Manila- I mean, they do scrimp out on air conditioning 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♂️
9. Not everyone speaks English, hence the need for Google Translate app on your device... but if you know how to speak French, you have a fighting chance to survive here hahaha!
10. Vietnam is actually pretty humid, even during months of September to November, you might as well bring along clothes that are light-weight, and breezy.

Lastly...

HAVE FUN AND EAT ALL THE DELICIOUS FOOD!

Love Always,
Nicole ❣🧚‍♀️

I've always inserted the 'yakult' reference in my blog for soooo many times nakakairita na !!! HAHAHA! However, I'll make this one an exception, because this day during our Hanoi trip was definitely about learning a thing or two about Vietnamese culture through their art.
... and the shakiest hand go tooooo.... HAHAHA!
Since we were able do some light shopping on our 2nd day, we figured why not go to a museum? As much as I could, I always try to go to museums in every country I travel to. I figure that going to one will give an explanation as to why a country is that way, despite going to a fine arts museum just like the one we visited in Hanoi. Vietnam Fine Arts Museum is about 10 minutes away from our hotel at the old quarters. Going there we took a grab ride, since Grab rides are reasonably priced, and there is no hassle in booking one.

Before going inside the museum, you must pay first the entrance fee of 40,000 Vietnamese Dong for adults, and 20,000 Vietnamese Dong for kiddies at the annex part near Helio cafe. There, they provide lockers, should you wish to stow away a couple of your belongings, giving you a hassle-free time exploring the lovely artworks inside the museum.

So, what's inside the museum? Short answer: Art. Long Answer? Check out the photos below:

Ancient Kyutix

It's an obvious thing to say that their artworks, particularly their sculptures, are heavily influenced by religion and belief. Aside from the different kinds of Buddha, one can also see the influence of their beliefs in ancestral spirits and deities. There are sculptures of fairies intricately carved in wood that dates back hundreds of years ago. Aside from religion, there are also an abundant of sculptures of old leaders and royal figures scattered on the 1st floor. You'll see different kings, queens, and princesses, all of which I remember are in lotus position.

On the 2nd floor you'll see different paintings. I wasn't able to take photos then, not because it's not allowed, but I seemed to have forgotten because I got engrossed by all the pieces. But if I were to describe majority of their paintings in the museum, I have noticed that the color scheme of the pieces are predominantly black, grey, and red. They are very dark, sad, and it was quite rare to see a painting with a happy subject, since majority of the pieces show people leaving their families behind. Compared to the pieces done by our homegrown talents like Amorsolo, Hidalgo, and even Luna, where they also created whimsical pieces (think of Juan Luna's Portrait of a Lady), I can't remember seeing something blithe and cheerful in the museum. Of course, this does not imply that all the artworks by Vietnamese artists are all sad, nor did I not appreciate the artworks there, since the artworks presented in the museum actually acts as a storytelling machine of how Vietnam was, or even is. I guess I just got used to the pretty colors of Pinoy artworks at our own National Museum of Fine Arts.

I just wanna clap.

After the 2 hours of getting our yakult on, we decided to have some coffee at Helios cafe. BTW 20% off the total bill when you present you museum ticket to them.
Something popcorn.

Find yourself a person who'll look at you like how I look at that drink.

Anyhoo, the latter part of the day was spent by wasting money at the Lotte mall hahaha! Nothing really interesting there to be honest, so I'll end this post here, with a vain picture of me.

OOTD deeets: Hat from Dong Xuan Market (that's the only thing I got there), top from Ukay-ukay, Skort from Vietnam (from one of the stores near Vincom mall), Bag from Chat Chat (which was a gift from my cousin :>), and my trusty Stan Smiths.

Love Always,
Nicole

Yup, not Saigon because Saigon is the former name of Ho Chi Minh, and that's at the lower part of Vietnam. Hanoi, on the other hand is at the upper part, somewhat nearer to China- of which I just realized the moment I arrived in Hanoi hahaha! *Sadly only Miss Saigon fans would get this reference*✌️✌️

My cousin, the travel enabler, Lot, booked our hotel at the Hanoi Diamond Hotel at the Old Quarters. The hotel is ok, nothing fancy, but hey for 4 nights costing roughly around Php 4-5000+ for 2 human beings, and with breakfast, that is a good deal! You may check 'em out here. Just a disclaimer, they aren't as fancy like the photos posted, so let's better keep our expectations low shall we? Hahaha!

I just realized that the 3 initial photos I included above has nothing to do about how the hotel looks like hahaha! But hey, they still relate somehow, because there's this 24 hour convenience store that sells these snacks. Actually, the hotel's location is really good, because it is surrounded with lots of shops, and restaurants that sell amazing food at such low prices! So, the first order of our day  was to buy as much water as we could, because my cousin can finish a liter of water in 5 seconds.

After helping my cousin hoard all the water at the convenience store, we decided to try out a cycle rickshaw ride around the town for around 200,000 Vietnamese Dong. One ride lasts for around an hour, where the driver will show you around the popular tourist places near the Old Quarters. One funny thing about this rickshaw ride is that we, me and my cousin, rode in one rickshaw together until we realized that it is meant for one passenger only! We only realized that when we saw a line of caucasian tourists riding a rickshaw one-by-one hahaha! In our defense, we really didn't know! HAHA! We guess we're too poor to get a rickshaw each!

My cousin, with the hat that she almost did not buy hahaha!

After being shown around the popular go-to's near the old quarters, we decided to ask the driver to drop us off the Cho Dong Xuan, or Dong Xuan market. According to google, and other travel websites, this market is perfect for scoring ridiculously low-priced clothing. Since our main agenda for this Vietnam trip was to bulk up our closet for our upcoming Japan trips, we did not think twice about putting this in our main agenda.
Uh- huh!

However after about 30 minutes inside this hot maze bursting with fabric, here are some things that I have noticed:

1. The vendors don't appear to want to sell you stuff. We tried buying this gorgeous black vest, but it seems like the vendor doesn't even care, and chose to ignore us instead. How nice.🤔🤔

2. The prices aren't as ridiculously low as we have expected- thanks to a couple of websites claiming that stuff there will be cheap. For sure westerners may find it ridiculously low, especially with how high their currency fares with the Vietnamese Dong, but for us pinays seeing a cute sweater that ranges from 400,000 to 600,000 Vietnamese Dong or around Php 1-2,000 won't make us buy that in a jiffy- we'll probably just save our money for SM Dept. Store finds.

3. The clothes they sell aren't that ... pretty. I don't know if we went there in an off-season, or it's just that they have a different fashion aesthetic in Vietnam, but the clothes that are sold in Dong Xuan are pretty much sub-par.

4. They prefer you buying in bulk. Now, now this one is more of a common sense though. After trying to catch a willing vendor to sell us something- it was rare, I swear, we were able to talk to one, and they told us that if you buy in bulk (like 3 to 6 pcs), the prices will be significantly lower.

5. If you want a hassle-free, clean shopping environment, please don't even go here! There are places, like the staircases, where people would loiter to smoke, gossip, sleep, and litter garbage without any care. Also, people aren't courteous, and wouldn't even bat an eyelash if ever they stepped on your foot.

My verdict? It's not worth the trip. Skip this place, there are plenty more you could go to in Hanoi!
Move along, there are other places to go to!

Despite not loving the place, we were able to buy some hats, and a vest which felt like finding a pearl out of a thousand empty oysters. By around 5 PM, we have already explored the market, leaving us with plenty of time to spend. In order to lift our spirits up, and to fix our oily faces, we decided to go to a mall- Vincom Plaza towers, that is!

Our frowns did not last long when we saw this restaurant in Vincom tower! Believe it or not, all of these food cost us around Php 600+ only! In Manila, a bowl of Pho will take you at around Php 300 already! I remember buying this Banh Mi for 20,000 Vietnamese Dong, or roughly around Php 50, which made me so ecstatic I almost bought 2! HAHAHA! What's more amazing is when we found out that the 20,000 Dong Banh Mi comes with a free glass of Soy Milk! Where else can you get that in Manila??? NOOOOOOWHERE!
Yup, nada.

After stuffing our face full of glorious Vietnamese dishes, we decided to roam around the mall and see what else can we waste our money and time into. Given that I enjoy looking at rows and rows of detergents, we decided to head over to the grocery. Upon entering the grocery, we were stopped, which was strange because if ever they would like to check our bags if we shoplifted something, shouldn't that be after we got out of the store? But I suppose they think waaaaay too advance, that we found out it is the norm in Vietnam to securely staple your bag in plastic upon entering any grocery store. In this way, they are more than sure that you wouldn't be able to fill in any products in your purse.
New fashion trend alert!
Don't worry, once you're at the counter you are allowed to wreck that plastic to get your cash or card. Though, come to think of it this practice is bad for the environment, given that you get to waste a lot of plastics just so they can make sure customers won't have the chance to pilfer anything :/ Vietnam, you better think of a better alternative-FAST!

Word
Basically that's how our 2nd day, or more of 1st full day in Vietnam was like - full of sweat, food, and smiles (at the latter part, that is haha!)

Love Always,
